Wow, wow, WOW.

You guys are really stupid. I mean this secret is moronic. This secret could be on Fox News. It's basically narrowing everything down to inaccurate bulletpoints. None of the points you're making are what people have actually said, they're things on the fringes.

There aren't "strong female characters" (which I am SO GLAD people are reappropriating that phrase to be a bad thing, thanks guys, really) in a sense that the female characters are actually TERRIBLE. Not just "weak" but TERRIBLE. The police officer is the "bitchy bully" to poor Sherlock, Molly is easily manipulated constantly and shamed for flirting, the older woman has her house abused and is treated like a maidservant instead of a landlord. And let's not forget John's girlfriend who couldn't TIP OVER HER CHAIR to save her life.

I could give two fucks if it's a male driven show and you enjoy it, but ignoring and writing off all the problems this show has, because don't want your enjoyment ruined by guilt, well that's shallow and lazy. You can enjoy problematic things, but stop defending them like they're perfect and throwing in a little shame for people who take a critical eye to things!

And you really think all the horrible Orientalism in the second episode was only to do with the fact that the characters were Chinese? REALLY?

I can't even with this secret.

Dude, Mrs. Hudson is awesome. Sorry she doesn't conform with your shallow view of feminism by caring for Sherlock enough not to kick him out on the street when he breaks some windows and puts science in the fridge instead of food.

I adore Mrs Hudson. Why on Earth can't she care for the young lads who are renting the flat from her? She also apparently smokes pot and steals Sherlock's skull (still want to know the story behind that). She's not your typical pensioner, by any means.

This.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not Mrs. Hudson that bothers me, so much as how they treat her and how it's played off as a joke. Which is really how I feel about most of the female characters.

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-03-18 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
Mrs. Hudson FTW. Like, she's exactly what a strong woman have been in that generation.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
There really is no misogyny like feminist misogyny.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Vague comment is vague! And probably missing the point. I am not hating on any of those female characters, I'm hating on how they're treated within the canon.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
You're right. I'd write a more enthusiastic reply of praise, but it somehow doesn't fit the situation.

Shit. The whole thing shows just how much people are willing to overlook for the slash (I still enjoy the show, but that doesn't mean I have to ignore and rationalize away all the shit in it).

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Why slash? They could be overlooking it due to ignorance, or because they enjoy the stories and adaptations thereof, or.. well, anyway.

the older woman has her house abused and is treated like a maidservant instead of a landlord.

... by Sherlock, who's kind of an asshole and treats EVERYONE like they're his servant. Yes, even John. Hell, ESPECIALLY John.
[Sherlock's phone beeps]
"Pass me my phone."
"Where is it?"
"Jacket."
[John looks around to see that Sherlock is wearing his jacket]

Oh, and the shooting the walls thing is canon; the original, Victorian Sherlock did that, too.

I have an issue with Sherlock's characterization that doesn't really have to do with how he treats Mrs. Hudson on it's own. It's more like he's an ass and doesn't get called out on it, except for rare moments (sigh, I'm still sad that the potential from the pilot episode didn't carry over, his character feels really inconsistent to me).

It's more that he mistreats her within the bounds of the show and it's played off as a joke. John doesn't seem to treat her any better either. It's like there are no consequences for being an ass? But that happens a lot in the show.

Not that I don't actually like Sherlock (I thought Benedict was amazing) and I'm hoping they can fix stuff for next series, I just have objections to people saying you should ignore all the issues with the show because if they like it there can be nothing wrong with it? It's such crap.

Yeah. That's totally what I said.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-18 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
And let's not forget John's girlfriend who couldn't TIP OVER HER CHAIR to save her life.

Thank you! God, that drove me more insane than any of the Asian stereotyping. For fuck's sake lady, tip over the chair. Of course John tips over his chair :| Also, why gag her? Everyone was making lots of noise so there was no practical reason to gag her plot-wise. Problem writing female dialogue? Just gag 'em!

(Don't even get me started on the James Bond villian-esque crossbow of dooom. Did they go back to the performance hall just to set up a crossbow in a tunnel? They have a gun for fuck's sake, I think that's intimidating enough, thank you. And they set up a sand bag/pulley system? Whut.)

You can enjoy problematic things, but stop defending them like they're perfect and throwing in a little shame for people who take a critical eye to things!

Yes x1000. I love poking fun at the shows and movies I love or even, yes, criticizing when they slip up. Finding plot holes gives me honest joy sometimes (is this just the MST3K fan in me?) I don't know, I think being able to find the flaws in things you love makes you appreciate the successful bits even more (or to put it differently, something has to be fucking awesome if, despite its problems, it's still primarily awesome.)

I noticed in another comment (I assume by you), you mention that you dislike how there are no repercussions for being a complete ass. And I think Sherlock is just that: a complete ass. Holmes is absolutely rude and insulting on occasion in canon but somehow it's just different; like he truly, honestly can't understand how others are not equipped with the same faculties. BBC Sherlock demeans and verbally attacks everyone and is constantly, purposefully belittling.

[identity profile] calli-thaala.livejournal.com 2011-03-23 06:37 am (UTC)(link)
Personally, I'm waiting until we meet the actual strong female characters from the canon before I even contemplate complaining about how women are portrayed and such. 'cos come on, Molly's and Mrs Hudson's roles may be to be walked all over but so are Lestrade's and Anderson's and Dimmock's and Mike's and sure, Sally's a bit of a bitch to Sherlock but so's Anderson and really, the only people who haven't gotten the shortstick in terms of characterisation are Sherlock, John, and possibly Mycroft (I say possibly 'cos he's certainly creepy and powerful and all but if he anything more? I mean, in the actual series, not fic. I <3 me some fic!Mycroft almost as much as I <3 fic!Lestrade...) But we've not seen the best candidate for strong female role (Irene) yet and we're only three episodes in so I really don't understand what people are getting so upset about.
