THIS.

[identity profile] glasgowsmiles.livejournal.com 2011-03-17 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
The Bechdel test always seems like the worst kind of false feminism to me, because it suggests that as a woman, I somehow 'shouldn't' enjoy male character-driven entertainment, or that by doing so I'm 'betraying the sisterhood', and that's just the biggest pile of crap.

And the wank over Moriarty being a man strikes me as so fundamentally STUPID. I... I guess I assumed that most 'Sherlock' fans got into it because they were fans of the ACD canon... *eye roll* I mean, yes, there are updates and changes, but the idea of so many people flipping out over that... ugh.

So yeah, anyway, you're not alone.

Man, I don't get people sometimes. I'm an epic ass about preferring female dominant shows/books/etc, but I love Sherlock! Well, the character interactions bit; the mysteries are way too easy to solve. (Er, the first two, at least - I still haven't gotten around to watching the third episode.)

AGREEEEEEED. +100.

I loved Moriarty, I thought he (character+actor) was amazing. But I haven't been a part of Sherlock fandom since, like, the first... fortnight. Craziest fandom I've ever known.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, what's wrong with that? The series is based off of books set in England, with white male characters all around. If you're going to criticize anything, criticize the books.

I don't watch Sherlock, but from what I'm reading, isn't it supposed to be based in the modern day? And if it's based in the modern day and the only Chinese characters represented are criminals and gangsters with accents then yeah, I do sort of see a problem and I can understand why people are calling racism.

Looks like a cool show otherwise, though.

We can agree to disagree, OP, but the second episode of Sherlock was so bad, imo. SO BAD. I don't even know why they did those things. Those many things!

I don't even think I want to argue to people who disagree or don't see it; not because I think their opinions are invalid but because I don't think we'd ever see eye-to-eye about that particular issue.

[personal profile] oxfordtweed 2011-03-17 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I've not seen much in the way of other adaptations, but isn't this Moriarty supposed to be the first Moriarty who's Irish? Given that Moriarty's an Irish name and all...

The second episode does bother me, but for so many reasons. It's just weak and contrived compared to Gatiss and Moffat's episodes. Sherlock figured out that the tenant would be connected to the case because they didn't pick up their phone book from the front step? What? And everybody just happened to live and work in buildings with conveniently-placed terraces.

[identity profile] gabzillaz.livejournal.com 2011-03-17 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't watch this so I can't comment on the racist thing, but...

1) I find it funny that you need to clarify that you are a female fan

2) You can have a show with male protagonists and still give the female characters a strong personality that doesn't revolve around men.

Wow, wow, WOW.

You guys are really stupid. I mean this secret is moronic. This secret could be on Fox News. It's basically narrowing everything down to inaccurate bulletpoints. None of the points you're making are what people have actually said, they're things on the fringes.

There aren't "strong female characters" (which I am SO GLAD people are reappropriating that phrase to be a bad thing, thanks guys, really) in a sense that the female characters are actually TERRIBLE. Not just "weak" but TERRIBLE. The police officer is the "bitchy bully" to poor Sherlock, Molly is easily manipulated constantly and shamed for flirting, the older woman has her house abused and is treated like a maidservant instead of a landlord. And let's not forget John's girlfriend who couldn't TIP OVER HER CHAIR to save her life.

I could give two fucks if it's a male driven show and you enjoy it, but ignoring and writing off all the problems this show has, because don't want your enjoyment ruined by guilt, well that's shallow and lazy. You can enjoy problematic things, but stop defending them like they're perfect and throwing in a little shame for people who take a critical eye to things!

And you really think all the horrible Orientalism in the second episode was only to do with the fact that the characters were Chinese? REALLY?

I can't even with this secret.

This is a case where I honestly think passing the Bedchel test would make the show worse, because it would essentially be putting unnecessary filler in what is already a way too short season.

And the second episode was loaded with extremely fun and exciting moments, and the puzzle was interesting and they solved it in a believable way. The interaction between John and Sherlock was amazing. So yeah, maybe the writers could have made the bad guys French instead of Chinese, and not occurred the wrath, but I don't have a problem with it being Chinese. It's still a good story.

Yes, the show is good. The show is better than good. The show is awesome. But that dosen't mean that it's perfect, and you know, trust me it's not.

1) Yes, the show is called Sherlock. It's centered around Sherlock because that's the point of the show. But that is no excuse for not having properly developed female characters that have a larger stake in the plot. All the plot driving characters are male and that's a problem regardless of what people think and until it's addressed it will BE a problem.

(And while we're on female characters: Molly. I have more of an issue with how fandom sees her than how she's written. She IS actually stronger than people give her credit.)

2) The second episode is racist, full stop. I challenge ANYONE to defend the scenes set in ~china town~ that are clearly meant to look ~mysterious and dangerous~ because you can't without willful ignorance, you just can't.

3) I like this Moriarty. No complaints there.

I just think that sometimes Sherlock fandom is filled with people who are too afraid to actually take a clear look at the show and realise it's NOT perfect and it DOES have flaws and some pretty serious ones. The second you bring it up your told to stfu because NOONE cares about *anything* other than Sherlock and John. And I hate that.

I think the problem with "No strong women characters" could easily be solved if there were more than three episodes per series. If it were a twelve or even a twenty episode series then there would be plenty of time to create and show terrific women characters. But as is, with only three episodes, the writers are going to focus on Holmes and Watson and very little of anyone else because they have to. Otherwise it wouldn't be "Sherlock" it would be more like "Arthur Conan Doyle's World of Mystery" or some nonsense like that.

In short, I guess I am saying I want more than three episodes per series, dagnabbit. (Mind you, I guess we are lucky that we getting any additional series since "Sherlock" is a co-production between BBC and PBS. And with the Republicans going after PBS funding, I don't know how long we are going to be able to get more episodes.)

1. Agree.

2. Eh... I really think there was some racefail, yes. It has less to do with "the bad guys wee Chinese!" and more with the way ALL the Chinese characters, good or bad, were portrayed.

3. Honestly, I don't care much for the Bledchel test, anyway.

4. I don't care that Moriarty is a White guy. I think he's annoying, over the top panto villain better suited to bad a Saturday morning cartoon, but his race and gender don't bother me. As you say, it actually might have been worse if they'd made him a minority.

You're doing it wrong.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I love Sherlock in ways I haven't loved a TV series in a decade, but I'll still call it out on being racist, full of genderfail, and bloody disappointing for being a contemporary re-make.

Also - the Bechdel Test? <a href="http://thehathorlegacy.com/the-bechdel-test-its-not-about-passing/>You missed the point</a>.

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2011-03-17 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with several parts of this. First of all, I can't believe people are getting this butthurt over three episodes. No, there aren't that many females, but give them a chance, for Chrissake. And I adore Moriarty; I think it's perfect that he's just any other guy, especially since Sherlock encountered him and totally missed it because he was hiding in plain sight and all. (Besides, I think Andrew Scott absolutely killed it in just one scene.) And I've definitely thought of the unfortunate implications of him being some other minority too, including a female. ...And do people seriously complain about the yellow paint? Because that kinda confirms my suspicions that a lot of people are just trying too hard to find wank, which is basically the most annoying thing ever.
