Just to throw it out there and let you know I do have a bias, this is coming from an H/Hr shipper, so you may take my opinion however you will.

Honestly, to say Hermione "deserved better" is a bit extreme. I love Ron as a character and as a person. He has both flaws and amazing traits and is one of the most realistic characters in the entire series.

However, and this may stem from my slight fangirling of Hermione as a child, my biggest problem with the R/Hr ship was that it felt to me that Ron didn't respect Hermione enough. I see the parts where he defends her, verbally and physically, but I just can't get those parts where he almost kind of derides her for her intelligence out of my head. It's just that her book smarts and his lack of them seems to be a real bone of contention constantly. He calls her a know-it-all (which she is), but it's in the "That's just how our silly Hermione is, don't mind her antics" kind of way.

Now I might be reading this wrong, but it felt to me that Harry had a deeper understanding and acceptance of Hermione's character while Ron would just take it at face value and brush it aside. Please clear things up for me if I'm totally and completely wrong.

Harry acceptance of her also came with a whole lot of ignoring her/tuning her out when she got going. I mean, Harry tells us repeatedly how he can't be bothered to deal/listen to her when he doesn't want to (when he needs her to save his ass, he's all ears. When she's offering him advice otherwise, you can almost visualize his eyes glazing over).

The things with Hermione is, she's insecure and begging for people to listen to her. She likes being thought of as the smartest person in the room, she likes when someone challenges her so she can go debate-crazy on them, she likes to throw around her knowledge without knowing she does. She thrives on it. Harry doesn't placate that need in her, because he doesn't want to hear it. It actually annoys him tremendously.

Ron on the other hand, looooooooooooves to let Hermione shine in this way, even though he doesn't know he's doing it. Yeah, sometimes they push things too far and things get heated (especially when they're younger and don't know any better), but Ron's never afraid to call her on things, and she enjoys it. Not every time, but if Hogwarts had a debate team, she'd be the president because she enjoys it that much. And Ron gives he all the practice she needs.

I always put it this way: Hermione and Harry would make excellent business partners. They bounce ideas off each other well, they succeed well when they work together, but at the end of the day, they need to be apart because too much time together and their personalities annoy each the piss out of other (we see this mostly from Harry's POV, since every extended period of time he has to spend with only Hermione--when Ron's MIA--he feels the need to mention how she's annoying him).
