False. They are both GREAT movies. TS3 had more working against it, having to wrap up a decades long franchise, and so I can see why it won, but seriously, HTTYD was a fantastic film and I wish it had been released a year previous/later so it could've won.

[identity profile] haro.livejournal.com 2011-03-18 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
TBH, I don't think it would have beaten Up (and it shouldn't have, imho).

[identity profile] leafish.livejournal.com 2011-03-18 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't watch both (I'm kind of a book purist. I'm sure it's a great movie, the fault lies with me!) but man I loved Toy Story 3. So much. I think a film that resonated with so many people on such a grand scale deserved the win.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-18 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
It's absolutely nothing like the book, at all. I think it'd be entirely possible for most people to watch it as an original piece without making any associations with the original, for real.

Hey, to each their own. My majoy problem with TS3 is that I was bored with the franchise. HTTYD is something new and fresh and the animation was breath-taking.

But I have friends who swear by TS3 and I'm fine with that.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-18 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed.

HTTYD was a fun movie, and I genuinely enjoyed it. But TS3 was in a class of its own. The way it maintained the magic of the first movies - to still appeal to kids - but matured as it needed to in order to speak to the original audience.

I didn't have the best childhood (and I've blocked out a good chunk of it), but the good parts were good, and TS3 spoke to me enough enough to make me miss playing with my brother.

[identity profile] ravewalker.livejournal.com 2011-03-18 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Gotta say, I've never liked Toy Story, even when I was little, and whilst it was a pretty decent film, that's one reason why I preferred HTTYD. Plus, adorable dragon. And quotableness.

That said, I was majorly disappointed that the score for HTTYD didn't win its category. The music was the best part of the film, for me.

Yeah, I don't even see how these movies are in the same league. Toy Story 3 is in a class all its own, really.

[identity profile] miezen.livejournal.com 2011-03-18 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I have to say I completely disagree, but to each their own.

[identity profile] jlh.livejournal.com 2011-03-18 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad the Oscars are over because I'm sick of basically EVERY fandom whining about them--Inception, Social Network, all of them.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-18 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
tbh I ADORED HTTYD and didn't like TS3 all that much. They reused a lot of plot points from the second movie, seemed to be trying way too hard to get tears out of college students who would've been kids when the first movie came out, and most of the jokes just fell flat to me (Spanish Buzz and Ken being 'girly' weren't very funny to me, sorry). I don't really see how it's in a league of its own.

[identity profile] katamanda.livejournal.com 2011-03-18 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
They are both great movies and it's simply a shame that they both came out in the same year. Both deserved to win and I would have been happy to see either take the top spot.

[identity profile] gabzillaz.livejournal.com 2011-03-18 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
To each their own. I think HTTYD was better.

[identity profile] xenafox.livejournal.com 2011-03-18 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Whaaaaaat. I love both movies but voted for TS3 to win (I'll admit half was probably fondness for the prior two movies and the jump to college and CRYING UGH) but..HTTYD was AMAZING. They are certainly in the same league, worthy competitors.

[identity profile] lljscrawls.livejournal.com 2011-03-18 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
You know what makes a film "good" or "great" is all based on opinion, right?

Well, opinion, and largely personal experience. I don't really have any of my old toys from childhood, so the thought of giving them up to go to college didn't affect me at all . . . mostly because I didn't have any to give up. But I do have a dog that I love very much; I'm almost twenty-one now, I've had her since I was nine, and she was four weeks old when I got her. She's my baby, my best friend, and she helped me get through some of the roughest parts in my life.

So, needless to say, HTTYD really resonated with me. No, she's not a dragon, but she's just as protective of me as Toothless is of Hiccup (yes, she has fought with other dogs before to protect me, and whenever my dad would jokingly act like he was going to hurt me, she'd snarl and snap until he stopped), she's just as hyper as Toothless is at the end of the movie, and she's always been there for me. When Stoic was ordering Toothless to be chained down, I imagined how I would feel if that were Shiloh . . . and I started crying.

So it really all just depends, OP. Personally, I adore HTTYD and I think it's a beautiful film. TS3 . . . not so much. But maybe it's just because I don't participate in either fandom, but I've seen more elitism come out of the TS3/Pixar fanbase, tbh. =/

Loved HTTYD. TS3 was a good movie but I honestly felt HTTYD was superior. Also I'm one of the few people who thinks TS3 was actually the weakest of the trilogy (hardly a bad film, but I just liked the others more- I liked TS3 like I said and it had some great parts and teary moments, but I honestly felt the 2nd and 1st one while of course not being as impressive in animation and how humans looked was, in terms of story telling, generally better.).

However it really wouldn't have made much sense if HTTYD had won the best animated picture, since of course TS3 got the best picture nomination to boot- so the best picture was more or less in the bag already. It would have been more interesting if say both of them had been nominated for best picture, so at least best animated would have been more of a surprise. (Or if TS3 hadn't been nominated for the 'big prize' at all at least.)

(Anonymous) 2011-03-19 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Disagree. IMO TS3 was all over the place story-wise, and I am so sick of Pixar using the "villain who seems like a good guy but is really *shock* a BAD GUY!" thing. They've done it a million times. They had even already done it in TS2!

Sure, it made me get all teary-eyed, but that was more because of the previous connection with the characters than anything else.

Also, Spanish Buzz was a dumb joke, and went on for too long.

Whereas I felt that HTTYD was just an awesomely put together movie. It was fun, funny, exciting. It brought the flash with those awesomely animated flying scenes, as well as the story. Not to mention the central relationship between Hiccup and Toothless being just amazing.

I feel like with TS3, the only time they actually tried was with the last like 15 minutes of the movie. And even with the last 15 minutes, I feel like they were more coasting on a decade long attachment to the characters than anything else. But with HTTYD, you could tell that the whole team was trying the whole movie. They weren't just content with pop culture references, or cheap laughs. They wanted to make a great movie, and (again, IMO) they did.

Also, HTTYD didn't have Randy Newman.

but your secret encompasses the reason the people in your fandom are bitching so much! this "IT'S IN A CLASS ALL ITS OWN" bullshit is annoying! nothing about TS3 makes it inherently "great"er than HTTYD, it's all a matter of opinion. TS3 stans can't seem to accept that. :/

No.

Spoilers for HTTYD

[identity profile] ncc-gqmf.livejournal.com 2011-03-19 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
Completely disagree. TS3 was a nice bookend to the Toy Story franchise, and made me cry, but was no more than a perfectly solid Pixar movie.

HTTYD had a freshness that TS3 simply didn't, to me. I watch a lot of damn movies, and both of them had a lot of trope material going on, for sure. But Toy Story reused a lot of material from its own franchise (on purpose, I think), and the way HTTYD combined its tropes really worked a lot better for me, especially with the totally superior animation and score.

AND THEN. AND THEN. The ending. If it had ended on a totally plain, "Everything is saved forever, yay!" note, I might agree with you more. The fact that they had the balls to permanently disable their main character and made it work so elegantly really propelled it into a higher class as a film for me.

Compare that to TS3... I mean, was there really any doubt in anyone's mind that that movie would end exactly the way it did?

(Anonymous) 2011-03-19 10:22 am (UTC)(link)
false, TS3 is a vastly overrated film (it's still good!) that only won the award because the academy likes to suck pixar's e-cock year after year after year after year. it was a movie marketed and dependent on nostalgia and knowledge of years that came before and would have been weak without them.

that said much as I adore (ADORE) httyd, the illusionist was the clearly deserving winner there and the fact that ts3 beat it is shameful.

...and this is why I don't get into the fandom for things I really, really love.

Honestly, how the fuck could anyone choose out of those two? There's no way. Of course TS3 was going to win. It's way more Oscar bait than HTTYD was, and that's fine.

I don't get why people get upset over the Oscars, really. I mean, I plan on going into film, and even I don't give two shits about the Academy's decisions anymore.

The Oscars are just little statues that don't mean anything anymore. In my mind, the real award is seeing little kids run out of the theatre waving their arms around and yelling "MOMMY, LOOK! I'M A NIGHT FURY!"

All the awards in the world wouldn't be worth that if I were a filmmaker.

But maybe that's just me.

Regardless, both movies were amazing, and people shouldn't bash at each other for liking one more or for one winning a stupid award or not. The real winners are in the hearts of the audience, anyway.
