I haven't been keeping up with the manga, but how is it any different then what the normal trio went through, or could have gone through?

I'm not in this fandom at all, so I have no idea what's even going on, but... "could have gone through"? You've just purposely eliminated any possibility of anyone caring for any other characters. After all, it could have happened to the main characters instead, so who cares right?

I meant it could have happened by the time the main characters were adults--it looks pretty much like the same story if Sasuke had made a different choice, so it doesn't seem like it would be that much different to me. They just have very similar personalities, relationships, and even character design, so I have no idea why they exist except the creator might be getting bored with his original set of characters, or they're there to teach a life lesson or something.

Same reason all the other characters exist - to tell a story. Just because their role in the story was "what could have been" doesn't make it any less valid.

I swear I don't know how, after Jiraiya and the frog costumes he made them wear, that I was still crying like a baby when Konan died. Tucking their tragic story and stories like that into the larger one, is the sort of thing that makes me keep reading the manga as much as the author pisses me off about other issues.

I felt sorry for them when they were younger, but by the time Kishimoto gave us the flashback, I didn't care anymore. It almost looked like he was going through a list of "Worst Childhood Ever" and it felt so forced. :/

Yeah I agree, that one came out of nowhere...not even a greyscale shading, nothing.

I was equally disappointed about Karin's coloring but I got over that, largely due to iconmakers who toned down the color to make it work for her. Nagato though...nope, still not over it..too bad, I had a great icon of him with black hair and I can't use it anymore.

Canon can fuck itself. Nagato has black hair and I'll never accept it being any other colour. /stubborn bitch

And yeah, I got over Karin, too, but yeah it's still kind of disappointing. Mostly because I've read a few fics where her black hair was a plot point and I can never enjoy them quite as much knowing that it's not actually black.

Not OP, but I wanted to contribute to comments:

What makes this particular trio tragic is that they never had a chance (even Orochimaru wanted to kill them off to prevent them from experiencing any more suffering) whereas none of the other trios were completely alone in the aftermath of a war in their homeland (which is likely why Jiraiya stayed with them and trained them until they were old enough to fend for themselves, according to ninja standards).

This trio also had a purpose in the story: to show that war breeds more war. What started out as a battle for peace in Hidden Rain went wildly large-scale and out of control when the scope widened to force all the nations to co-exist in peace by, ironically, defeating them in war and taking power over all of them. The interesting part was that the trio succeeded in uniting the Great Nations, only they united to fight against the Akatsuki.

There may be another purpose too: Konan's fight scene and abilities makes me hopeful that we haven't yet seen the full scope of her impact on Madara and his plans. (Gotta love that of the three, Konan was the one who fought Madara! Konan did some real damage on the guy too!)
