When people are suicidal they are not in a very stable frame of mind. I don't doubt that he had other reasons as well, but the idea that fame was part of it? Not such a big leap. And no, it's not a condemnation. People's minds work in fucked up ways when they're that unhappy.

He's dead because he had a mental illness. So even if he wrote something about being famous or whatever in his suicide note, the only reason he's dead is because he was mentally ill.

People don't kill themselves to become famous, they kill themselves because they are sick, or suffering, and can't take it anymore and see death as the only option.

I'm sick of people misunderstanding and trivializing mental illness, so yes, this secret pisses me off on a very personal level.

Not to sound like a bitch, but I'm sick of people calling me mentally ill for being suicidal. I'm mentally very stable. I have very rational reasons for not wanting to live anymore, and I'm only not doing it because I don't want to hurt my family.

So, yeah, not saying this is true for everyone ... but this suicidal = mentally ill attitude really pisses ME off. Not everyone kills themselves because they're unstable, in a weird state of mind, or whatever else you wanna call it.

The majority does, though. With depression - feeling worthless, always sad or just constantly numb, unable to experience any optimism for their own life or the world around them in general, experiencing less emotion at all (amongst a huge range of other possible symptoms) - being one of the most common reasons.
There are also a lot of other illnesses besides depression, that can lead people into being suicidal, of course.

It might just be me, but I always thought all living organisms naturally "want" to continue to, well, live :/ Or at least have their genes survive in their kids or, if there aren't any, other family members.
I guess that's a "problem" that comes along with humans always consciously reflecting on themselves and the question of the purpose of their existence *shrug*

Speaking for myself, I enjoy life, being alive, living, and the only thing, that could make me give that up, would be losing the ability to do so. And the strong belief, that I can gain it back. Which, according to my psychology professor, would hint a possible depression, if it lasts for more than two weeks without a break (an exact diagnosis would take some time, though, but depression is usually the first thing that comes to mind, since it's so common).
And depression = mental illness.
Mental illnes =/= being all super crazy and unstable and weird and just plain ass fucked up and a worthless piece of shit.

I did say "because they are sick, or suffering" since a lot of terminally or chronically ill people choose to end their own lives. I can only assume that's what you're talking about since I can't think of any other sane reason to want to off yourself.

ETA: And since the secret is about Kurt Cobain, then yes, mental illness is relevant and that is obviously what drove him to suicide.
