i am in fandom because it's fun
i'm not proud or embarrassed of it, it's kind of just who i am. i'm proud of myself as a whole, but a day spend drawing fanart for me does not boost my self-esteem because i have high standards for myself

Uh, that same logic can be applied to gaming.

You're in fandom because it's fun. I play video games because it's fun. Fandom is what you're into, it's just kind of who you are, video games are what I'm into, it's just kind of who I am.

I don't get any self esteem out of beating a game, but the satisfaction that hey, I've completed something, similar to how I'm sure you gain some satisfaction out of completing a work of art.

to some extent, i think you're definitely right, and i see your point. however, completing a game doesn't earn me anything real. when i am in class and i finish a well-drawn, physical piece, i feel very proud because my skills have developed and i'm closer to getting into the college i'm aiming for. playing video games, for me, definitely brings satisfaction, but not pride.

And yet you read some kind of built-in pride into the term gamer. Funny, t hat.

"gamer" carries with it implications of something like an identity. technically it works to describe someone who plays video games, but i just find it irksome, personally.

Then what, pray tell, is a gamer? What kind of games do they like to play? How often do they like to play them? Tell me the consensus.

I know tons of boys and girls who are fabulous "gamers" and are incredibly good at COD4, SSBB, KH, etc. But personally, it is not how I want to define myself because it's not my main focus. If the artist's main focus in life is art, the gamer's main focus in life is _______?

Ah, you must not believe in casual gamers then. Most people aren't solely gamers, just as many people don't consider themselves solely artists.

It ultimately comes back to the word "gamer" and oh, how i hate it so

What if I'm predominantly interested in their design and creation as well as just playing them, and aspire to work in the games industry? Am I then justified in calling myself a gamer? There are tons of people who really genuinely care about games, and it feels a bit like you have an idea of games as being worth less than other forms of entertainment. Maybe you don't, but some of your comments here make it sound as if you do. I sometimes take issue with people who play Angry Birds and football games calling themselves 'gamers', but then I get told I'm an elitist...

The word "gamer" carries a stigma, whether the person it's referring to is the stereotypical basement-dwelling WoW/Halo/COD bum or not.
It sounds as if your main issue with my comment is that I dislike the term "gamer". Playing games is a hobby, not a lifestyle. In the case that you presented, it's a little bit different from that of someone who is usually classified as a gamer, so I don't know how to respond. Designing games, in my eyes, is a more worthy calling than playing them. Wanting to pursue a career in the video game industry is no less respectable than wanting to pursue a career in science or television or writing, etc.

Games as a whole are definitely a valid and worthy form of entertainment. I spend more time playing games than I do watching TV, and artistically I will admit I've been more stimulated by Persona 3 than the works of, say, Lee Krasner.

That's cleared some things up - I think I read too much into some of your comments. I can't say that I completely agree with your hate for the term 'gamer', but I definitely see where you're coming from and agree that it still has those connotations. Personally, I think that some people really do regard it as a lifestyle rather than a hobby - a lifestyle where they're willing to spend a good chunk of their life basically living in a different world. I won't make a value judgement on that here! But yeah, "gamer" as a general term for anyone who likes to kick back and play a console game a few hours a week is pretty silly, and I would rather people didn't use it unless they really did regard playing games as a huge part of their identity.

Then I guess you don't believe in professional gamers then,
