Yeah, I was thinking about that myself.

Cecil and Kain set an incredible standard for being useless, whiny jackasses who need someone to hold their hand in order to keep them from yet another self-destructive meltdown. If we need a source to blame for the series' preferences for irritatingly angsty prettyboys, FF4's persisting popularity would be it.

Honestly, I'm part of FF4's persisting popularity - it's still my favorite one in the series (though 5, 8, and 12 are so close that it's really hard to say other than the fact I've loved 4 longer than those others), and I adore Kain to pieces. So I'm not knocking FF4 here at all.

But saying that the characters in the SNES FF games weren't angstmonkeys "like in modern FF games", and using FF4 for an example... it's kind of like the people who hated FF7 because "It's Final FANTASY, not Final SCI-FI!" when there were robots and floating mechanical castles back in the very first one, and the second and third installments we got in North America involved flying a spaceship to the moon, killing a giant robot with tanks, and giant mechs that fired energy weapons. ;)
