Oh, but I love Princess Ida. But then, I first met it in a student production that may have performed it in a way that subverted much of the sexism, so now I always see it through that lens. But it has gorgeous songs, and everyone except Ida and Hildebrand is shown as idiotic, and those two are arrogant, so I don't know that you can take any of the sexist views expressed as being endorsed by the show.

Plus, we are shown that the only men Ida was allowed to talk to growing up are everything she believes men to be, hence her view of men. And (at least in our production) the ending (while having the trappings of the typical comedy ending) is really a tragic betrayal of Ida by everyone she counted on, in which the girls at her school are shown to be all words and no stomach for action, while her brothers (who she despises for their violence and stupidity) nearly die defending her. She is clearly forced into the marriage, and yet everyone rejoices as if it is romantic. I kind of love that: it's like a play on G&S's own conventions.
