I have a problem with it because if a fan is writing fanfiction, I assume that they like the show enough to actually take the time to write a story. Therefore, I expect them to do justice to the characters that they are writing. Just writing an OC and giving them a canon character's name is lazy and some people do that.

As for grammar, I can understand if it's a language barrier thing and overlook it most of the time. But betas exist and some people just don't use them. It's not an "ugh this person can't spell/sucks at grammar thing;" it's just really hard to get through a story when there are just a ton of spelling and grammar mistakes constantly jerking me out of the plot.

The thing is some people view characters differently from what others would view them as being. Take for example Severus Snape from the Harry Potter fandom. There is some that view him as a tragic hero and justify his behavior while others just view him as just an ass.

IMO, all fanfiction is slightly OC if not completely OC.

I understand that. But characters still have a voice, an essence, and while they may do OC things in fics, they still have to be "them." They can't just be a completely different character, with a different voice and manner of speaking, but with the same name. There's the way they speak, the way they interact with their friends and their family, the things that make them who they are that can't just be gutted out.

Seems to me the only one under obligation to conveying that essence is the original author.

If a fanfiction author doesn't stay true to what makes a character his-/herself, then I don't consider them to be writing about the same character; in my mind, they're just writing an original character with the same name.

I'd also like to point out that - if the story is written well-enough and the fic author's perception or interpretation of the character is based in canon - I can be persuaded of many, many things. Something's not OOC just because they're written differently than the exact way I'd choose to write it. A good, complex character has many facets, and a talented writer can effectively and credibly emphasize certain facets over others. Therefore, even if people do see characters differently, that doesn't mean we - as readers, writers, whatever - can't agree whether something is IC or OOC based on shared knowledge (i.e. canon).

Exactly. And that comes through quite clearly when you read a story. You can watch the progression of the character's thoughts from one point to another and see how they could logically come to behave a certain way based on their past experiences and the growth they've undergone. Some authors just skip over that growth and say "Hey it's a fanfic! They can do whatever I want them to do!" and that just grates on my nerves. I just feel like they don't care about the actual character at all.
