isn't the target audience young kids and teens???
i know it's really popular with older people, but that's what it's always seemed to me...

The target audience, as was presented to me, was both people who have never picked up a Pokemon game and people who have been playing since the start. There's a reason Nintendo calls it an expanded audience. I for one came into the games as an adult. Many people who enjoy the series are adults. Many parents play with their children. The target audience isn't just little kids.

I really don't like people acting as if as if I'm only a mature gamer if I play things rated T or M. I don't like most of those games--a lot of them are FPS which make me nauseated. Why should I be looked down upon for liking "kiddy" games--or anything really--that's fun for me?

well okay, that's how you've seen it presented, i've always seen the opposite. i've been playing since blue & red came out too, i still play it, i know tons of people who played the first ones still play it as adults, but i still see mostly young kids playing it sooooo
& all the ads at my local game stores have it targeted towards kids... i'm probably wrong, i'm sorry if i made you upset.

also i never implied anything about what makes a mature gamer??? please don't put words in my mouth. i don't care what other people play, what they enjoy is what they enjoy right?

I haven't played far enough to know if the translators realized what a TERRIBLE idea putting that in there would be and changed it, but that's the literal translation. (Meaning that's def. what the Japanese says, too.)

But yeah, I don't think Pokemon was ever for older OR younger kids - I always thought it was nicely neutral about it's 'intended audience'. =)

Yeah, I've seen a lot of older people (even people in their late 20s) get into it. I think we'd consider this series more of a family friendly, like Doctor Who--

Yeah, that's the target demographic for the games and the animated series, etc.

The fact that older people enjoy it at as well doesn't mean it's targeted at an adult audience.

Pretty much this. I'm 23 and I know other bunches of people my age or older who play, but that doesn't change that it's marketed towards children.

I'm not fooling myself but at the same time I don't see the need to get all defensive about it :p

I've personally noticed that some people in fandom get overly defensive when you point out the things that they love are made primarily for children, probably because they assume that because it's "for children" that's like saying that it's of lower quality or whatever, when that is definitely not the case. In fact, there's so much media out there that is made for children that's of better quality than media that's made for adults. The target demographic shouldn't matter, but hey, people think it does for whatever reason.

I'll admit I get overly defensive a lot in public, but this is because I hear a lot away from fandom that even being interested in the things I am labels me a "child."

Someone actually asked me after I got married "so you gonna stop playing with dolls and video games and be a real grown up and have children?"

...fuck what. Because you're an adult when you have no hobbies or interests and have sank your entire being into being a parent and/or workhorse?

And it's not as easy as "ignore them" for many people. It's irritating.

Well, merely pointing out that a game is marketed primarily for children is a far cry from suggesting that any adult who likes it is automatically childish.

I know it's not easy to ignore these people, but if you really enjoy Pokemon or other qhatever, then who really cares what they think? Personally, I haven't been judged too harshly by people for my love of cartoons or whatever else people label as "childish" but if I was I doubt it would bother me that much
