More about the responses than the secret, but:

I also thought the pairing was poorly developed and unnecessary, but I don't think it deserves the criticism for being another example of the typical loser guy/hot girl trope either. Unlike the male characters in real examples of that trope, Hiccup's never really a loser. He sees himself as one and so do the other villagers, but the audience is never meant to see it that way. It lacks the double-standard that makes "loser guy/hot girl" so gross ("a girl should accept any guy who likes her just because he likes her even if there's nothing else good about him") so calling it that sounds like a poor excuse to rag on it.

That's actually a good point.

The thing is, it still has a lot of the questionable implications of loser guy/hot girl - namely, it doesn't matter if a girl hates your guts at first, you should totally not leave her alone and move on with your life, because she'll come around eventually as long as you're a Nice Guy who "deserves" her.

Granted, it's about the 50000th movie to imply that, so I don't think it's fair to single it out. But I can see why it rubs people the wrong way.

I dunno, I'd say he actually does move on with his life and leave her alone. When he starts working with Toothless, he pretty much stops pursuing her and she starts becoming curious about him because he's acting so shifty/changing. And she doesn't respond with annoyance that he suddenly doesn't worship her (at least in my reading of it), but suspicion about how he's suddenly become good at defeating dragons. So I'd actually say it does work as something of an aversion of that--his core values remain the same, but he steps up and matures a lot, completely independently of his interest in Astrid.

Except Hiccup never pursued Astrid, so there was never a chance where he needed to "leave her alone." She was the one who got obsessed with finding out his secrets and wouldn't leave him alone, and he only shared Toothless with her because of that. If he had brought Toothless to her himself thinking "I'm going to show her what an awesome trainer and sensitive guy I am so she'll totally like me" then that would be more of a typical example, but that's not how it happened at all.
