I had just watched the movie yesterday.

And I didn't understand how she ended up with him at all. Suddenly she got on Toothless and that made her like him? She didn't so much "develop" as she did a perplexing heel face turn.

It would be cool if they stayed as bros or something. Their romance sounds like bullshit...lollook at my dragon, i'll ttly take you out of a ride. omg ~love~.

[identity profile] micromyni.livejournal.com 2011-03-20 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually prefer Astrid with Tuffnut. But these two are...acceptable.

[identity profile] checkerblob.livejournal.com 2011-03-20 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I really liked that movie, but I didn't ship them either, OP.

[identity profile] sugarsurge.livejournal.com 2011-03-20 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Loved the movie, apathetic about the ship. I mean if it were developed more and she had maybe spent the day with Hiccup getting to know Toothless, slept on the idea of oh what dragons, came back the next day out of curiosity, and so on; and near the movie's end she started thinking of him romantically, I wouldn't have minded. As it is now, I just don't care about it.

But that movie was a total BOY AND HIS DRAGON FRIENDFEST for me, so...

For me, it was the same old "quirky/undesirable guy gets rewarded by getting a hot chick at the end of the movie" deal. I mean, it's just the obligatory het romance. So yeah, I really don't get how people go so crazy over that pairing.

[identity profile] cloud-riven.livejournal.com 2011-03-20 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't like it because of the whole male lead getting the nearest primary female character like a prize herp derp barf garbage. Never fails to make me frown that one. Imagine if Astrid was a guy, a guy who was a natural at vikingness and top of the class. Guy!Astrid would probably just end up being a bro.

But, right, girls and boys just being friends. What madness is that.

Still liked the film.

[identity profile] expiredramen.livejournal.com 2011-03-20 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Their relationship was really predictable. I was sitting there thinking yep that guy is the loser and of course the girl will go with her duh what's new. I'd be surprised if they just ended up as being bff or something..

[identity profile] flyingfortress.livejournal.com 2011-03-20 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
mte. They were extremely forced. One ride on a dragon and she suddenly loves him, when she had hated him five minutes before? uhno. I like my Hiccup single, thanks.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-20 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I liked it because you have to figure they've known each other since they were little babies, growing up in a tiny village together. So it wasn't like they were total strangers to each other. And she was still nicer than the other kids and realized there was something more to him, and he seemed perpetually impressed by her strength, determination, and badassossity, even when she used it to smack him around.

It wasn't developed well, but I didn't see the ending as twu wuv or anything either. I just saw it as he did something vastly impressive that showed great strength of character and she was willing to give him a chance for it, and she was someone who was an incredibly strong and driven person that he admired enough to forgive the fact she was cold towards him. Also there was the fact he probably saw the coldness as something he genuinely deserved for sucking so badly, which shows something interesting about his self esteem.

So overall, there are a lot of interestingly revealing character tidbits there, and there could be a lot of depth to it if they develop it more with the future movies. Was it developed the best? No. Was it twu wuv? I didn't think it was, nor did I think they portrayed it as Disney style true love. I thought it was a more realistic, awkward teenage like thing.

I guess I prefer relationships like that more than ones that are spelled out all over the place because you can play around with a ton of headcanon for it with fics and RP, and I'd rather see them developed over a much longer period of time than one movie. Teenage infatuation that isn't love at all and could turn into anything from marriage to an incredibly messy breakup ftw. Not every relationship has to be storybook nor does it have to be hyper-realistic to reveal things about the characters.

tl;dr Thinking they're ill-suited for one another doesn't mean it's a bad pairing, it just means they either have to grow into it being a good pairing, or it'll stay a bad one and reveal interesting things about the characters in the process. They weren't above throwing us some curveballs in the writing for everything else. Just because they didn't have time to do it for Hiccup and Astrid in this movie doesn't mean they won't in the sequels.

On top of the other points people are making, I find the whole "she hits him and it's funny!" thing pretty offensive, to be honest. I don't care of she's a girl, I'm pretty sure she's stronger than him. And even if she wasn't... why is it funny?

I think it was more like... she was used to being the strongest, most capable kid in the village, used to everyone else being pretty useless. Suddenly some guy who used to be a total loser starts excelling; she gets pissy because he's stealing her thunder, but at the same time she's interested because now there's someone who is her equal or even better. She won't SHOW that, so she acts even meaner to him, but then he proves he can trust her and that he's worthy of having that sudden ability. And then they live happily after after etc.

[identity profile] sakikotetsu.livejournal.com 2011-03-20 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Thiiiiiiiiiiis, holy christ, this.

[identity profile] 0cclumency.livejournal.com 2011-03-20 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, i adore the film but i really don't care for astrid or the two of them as a couple

[identity profile] gabzillaz.livejournal.com 2011-03-20 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't like it eiher :/ I don't hate it, but I think it would have been a perfect movie without the romance.

[identity profile] havemy-heart.livejournal.com 2011-03-20 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't ship them at all. This movie is about Hiccup and Toothless for me and, while Hiccup and Astrid getting together doesn't take away from my enjoyment of it, it also doesn't do anything for me. So the main character ended up with the hot girl. Yawn.

[identity profile] leafish.livejournal.com 2011-03-20 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)

FUCK I hate Astrid, she was such a dull, unlikeable character, and was poorly acted, in my opinion.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-20 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
lol

I'm an Astrid/Ruffnut shipper myself but I don't remember being all that surprised by Astrid/Hiccup. It's a kid's movie. Durp.
vitani: (I'll blame it on the time)

[personal profile] vitani 2011-03-20 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I completely disagree with this and with most of the comments. She isn't 'mean to him for no reason', she doesn't mock him like the others, she criticizes him in areas where she not only thinks he should improve, but can improve. Astrid has no problem with Hiccup until he starts seeming like he doesn't care about dragon training, then she gets frustrated because he used to care, he used to try, and he's not trying anymore. (And it's very important to her, because she's worked hard to be good at it for so long.) Notice how Astrid never criticizes the others, even though they do just as badly as Hiccup -- she doesn't expect anything more from them. She does think more of him, however, and thinks he can do better.

I've actually been tempted to write an essay about these two because I really do think they work well together, and I think that more every time I watch the movie, because I pick up more on how Astrid is very aware of Hiccup from the first part of the movie on, and how she treats him differently than everyone else. She's also the one who doesn't let him stay down and depressed and prompts him to go on and do what she knows he can do. Astrid is the first person to really believe in Hiccup, and she's so obviously proud of him in the scenes where he's showing the others how to work with the dragons. I think that does a lot for him and will also help him in the future when her support will be very helpful for him as he grows as a Viking -- because let's face it, he has their respect now, but he still doesn't exactly think like them.

That said, I do think they were underdeveloped in the movie and that a lot of that was cut out for time -- there's a deleted scene I'm very fond of that includes her finding his workshop and being interested in his designs. So I think they intended to develop it more and then cut it for time. Still, I strongly disagree with the "hot strong chick gets with geeky guy" or "she just likes him because he impressed her with a dragon", because I don't actually think that was it at all. Did it help? Hell yes it helped. But she was paying attention to him before that.

And frankly, if someone you knew to have cared strongly about becoming a strong Viking suddenly a) stopped seeming to care about it and b) suddenly inexplicably became better than you, even though it's what you've worked your whole life for, and c) would not talk to you about it, I'd be pretty pissed too.

tldr; I love Astrid, she's my favorite character, and I love the two of them together.

More about the responses than the secret, but:

I also thought the pairing was poorly developed and unnecessary, but I don't think it deserves the criticism for being another example of the typical loser guy/hot girl trope either. Unlike the male characters in real examples of that trope, Hiccup's never really a loser. He sees himself as one and so do the other villagers, but the audience is never meant to see it that way. It lacks the double-standard that makes "loser guy/hot girl" so gross ("a girl should accept any guy who likes her just because he likes her even if there's nothing else good about him") so calling it that sounds like a poor excuse to rag on it.

You see her being mean to him for far longer than you see her being nice. It does sour things. I just hope she made up for it after.

[identity profile] lychii.livejournal.com 2011-03-20 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I seriously wish this scene (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcNNAeh5LJU) was kept in, or something simlar. I also wish they just stayed friends. It's ok for guys and gals can have platonic relationships. :/

(Anonymous) 2011-03-21 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Did anyone else like her because she was kind of unpleasant, at least until she actively started spending time with Hiccup? I liked the fact that she was good at kicking ass and being awesome, but was also kind of a jerk, and got jealous of Hiccup when he started upstaging her.

And I like that she actively tried to figure out what Hiccup was up to. That made her an interesting character, to me.

And I don't think the Loser Guy/Awesome Girl problem applies here because Hiccup wasn't a loser. He was actively awesome at inventing things, the problem was that the vikings weren't interested in that stuff. Hell, the whole movie starts because he was able to do something that no other viking had been able to do: capture a Night Fury.

Man, I love this movie. And I think the romance is cute, and that they combine to make an awesome power couple.

But I might be alone on this, here?

1+
