I'm going to invite the ire of this Martha love-fest by saying I still think she's a shitty character.

Not (just) because of the unrequited love thing. But that was her whole character - well, that and being black/a doctor (when the writers remembered). She had nothing else - nothing to like or hate. She was a flat, boring, bland character.

Rose was a bit better in terms of characterization, but not by much. I love Donna and Amy - they're so complex, so interesting, even when they do something "bad" they're still enjoyable to watch. Rory... well, we'll see about him. He's sweet, I just worry that he'll go the way of Rose and Martha in terms of dimensionality (as in, having none besides "in love with X")

I will always wonder how some people get boring bland and some people don't. Are you saying that her motives were too clear and generic to make her interesting or are you saying that you could never get attached to her to consider beyond the surface motives presented? I'm just saying this because I found of his new companions, she was the most curious. She didn't want to know just how to solve a problem, she wanted to know about the problem.

Yep, that's exactly it. Imo, she has no real defining qualities or flaws - flaws are really important to me, to get me to care about a character and their development. Donna was fairy shallow, but grew and matured like whoa (did I mention I love Donna to bits?). Amy was flighty and short-tempered, but gets a solid, stable relationship. Martha was... just kinda there. And her development was learning how... to not have a self-destructive crush? To "stand on her own"? Sorry, I'm not impressed.

And you could say any of the companions are "curious" - that's the point of them. They're an audience surrogate, their purpose is to ask the audience's questions so the Doctor can answer them and keep the story going.

That's fair. I just find it really interesting that some people see a personality for a character and some people don't. I think that's quite different that divergent ideas on someone's personality.

I think I mean curious in the intellectual sense. Not "What is this Dalek doing here?" but "How does this Dalek work?"
