I agree completely OP, Martha Jones was a badass and way more than just an unrequited love plotline. It makes me sad that for so many people, her falling in love with the Doctor invalidated her strength, growth and general awesomeness.

Martha's the only companion of the New Who that I really like.

I think she's nice, but I guess I will always not like her for having this a bit of jealousy for Rose...

Martha was bad ass and had a pretty good character arc by the end of Series 4.

I totally adored Martha and preferred her to Rose, actually. The only thing I disliked about Martha was how quickly she fell for the Doctor, and how she stuck with that unrequited love even when it was obviously not going to be more. It just seemed so awkward for the Doctor, who really couldn't give her more than friendship and a smooth operator he is not. :B

To be fair, if someone showed me such amazing things I probably would fall a little too, but Martha seemed more sensible than that. At the same time, I like that she wasn't all sensible and perfect, it makes her more relatable... but the pining was a little awkward to watch for both parties involved.

I loved it when she stood up for herself and demanded something better, though. I just don't understand how she went from being engaged to one doctor to being married to Mickey, I hope they explain that to me in later episodes although I'm really not expecting it at this point.

tl;dr I agree OP, Martha is a BAMF.

While I never liked Martha I'd never say she wasn't a strong character. She walked through hell on Earth for an uncertain end and after that victory, she had the sense and strength to realise how unhealthy it would be for her to stay with the Doctor. Even though she loved him and loved the sights and adventures he offered. I found her dull, and I found the end of the third season disappointing, but I respect her for what she did.

[identity profile] scarletsherlock.livejournal.com 2011-03-21 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Martha is still my favorite companion from New Who. I still don't understand why fandom gives her such a hard time. I love her so, so much. She's a badass, she's a dork, she's intelligent, she's caring and sweet, she's beautiful, and she saved the freaking world. She rocks.

[identity profile] raequiem.livejournal.com 2011-03-21 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm going to invite the ire of this Martha love-fest by saying I still think she's a shitty character.

Not (just) because of the unrequited love thing. But that was her whole character - well, that and being black/a doctor (when the writers remembered). She had nothing else - nothing to like or hate. She was a flat, boring, bland character.

Rose was a bit better in terms of characterization, but not by much. I love Donna and Amy - they're so complex, so interesting, even when they do something "bad" they're still enjoyable to watch. Rory... well, we'll see about him. He's sweet, I just worry that he'll go the way of Rose and Martha in terms of dimensionality (as in, having none besides "in love with X")

I didn't really like Martha, but I think I would have disliked any companion that came after Rose, just because they'd have been the rebound companion. Ten treated her like the rebound, and it got old really fast. I feel like if there'd been a buffer companion between Rose and Martha, I'd have liked Martha better. Did any of that make any sense?

However. Never let it be said that her exit wasn't totally awesome. She deserves major props for insisting on better for herself.

Thank you for summing up everything I loved about her.

A+

Plus, I love that she got to choose to leave. Her independence was my favorite part of her character.

[identity profile] lolofielding.livejournal.com 2011-03-21 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I always have mixed feelings when it comes to Martha. On her own, she is a pretty cool character and on the whole she's pretty badass. But I hated how she was made the "rebound" companion. Why?! I can't remember any time previous when the Doctor had ever made out like one of his companions wasn't as important as the previous one and, sorry, that is so what Ten did throughout S3. If he didn't realize what he was doing well then it showed him as a fucking idiot. The unrequited love angle wasn't so much a fault on her as it was on how much it made Ten look like a dick (yeah, yeah, he was heartbroken after losing his precious Rose, blah blah blah, don't give a shit). It was brought up in EVERY episode and it grated faster than the whole Ten & Rose are "meant to be together" shtick in S2.

I think without that hindering their relationship, Martha could have stayed a companion for a lot longer and become more awesome. Not that I can complain too much about that because her leaving gave us Donna. <3

[identity profile] missing-mile-15.livejournal.com 2011-03-21 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I loved Martha. I didn't like everything that was done with her, but her character itself was great.

[identity profile] kotori99.livejournal.com 2011-03-21 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I love Martha!

Sure, there were some problems with the writing of her character and how Ten treated her made me rage, but even these problems didn't stop her from being an awesome companion. You summed up why she's my favourite perfectly in this secret <3

[identity profile] ryttu3k.livejournal.com 2011-03-21 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Martha is the best <3 Guys, companions are more than their romantic entanglements! She saved the world with words, do you know how freaking AWESOME that is for someone with pacifist tendencies?

[identity profile] aeka.livejournal.com 2011-03-21 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)

[identity profile] mfirefly10.livejournal.com 2011-03-21 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I love Martha Jones. That is all.

[identity profile] nevasanth.livejournal.com 2011-03-21 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I had a problem with her because I just couldn't buy who and what she was supposed to be (super genius doctor). For all her strength, she came across, to me, as a giggly, overly cheerful school girl. She reminded me of the girl I met my first year of college who said, "I want to be a nurse and all, but I'm totally afraid of blood! *laugh*"

There were absolutely good things about her, and as is the case for many others, I liked the choice that she made at the end. But overall, I was glad when she was gone.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-21 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes! Agreed! Martha was my fave, and I don't get why people bash on her. She was cute, clever, and come on, she spent a whole year traveling around the world while the Master was trying to track her down. And then, she saved the world. That is BADASS.

[identity profile] shadowpiranha.livejournal.com 2011-03-21 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
ITA. Much love for Martha.

[identity profile] pendingprogress.livejournal.com 2011-03-21 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't dislike Martha as a character (liked what we saw of her, but that really wasn't much because she simply wasn't developed past is a doctor/in love with the Doctor) but I disliked her season because of the aforementioned non-development, and also because while her being in love with him was realistic and fine (if a bit sudden) it just became all she ever talked about. And in real life, even if your life is totally mundane, no matter how infatuated you are you do occasionally talk about, you know, this programme you saw, or whose turn it is to do the dishes. She was going around both space and time and all they thought she would talk about was him? Um...no. It just got old really fast. It's annoying because she could've been a lot better (I preferred her to Rose) and she was better when she was brought back later. Because she'd clearly gotten over the Doctor enough so she could talk about some other shit, namely saving the world.

What I mostly don't get about new!Who though is the Doctor's infatuation with Rose. That just boggled me. That was the first time I'd ever properly understood the whole 'show, don't tell' principle because they totally fucking didn't. She was a general good companion when she was there and they had some good times, then when she was gone...my god, he was on about her like she was fucking Mother Theresa and Lady Gaga and Cleopatra and Naomi Campbell all rolled into one or something. I did not know who this character was. Anyway, that's another conversation altogether...

I wanted o like Martha. I really did. But she was just too "polished" for me, and not in a Mary-Sue-ish way...but something never seemed right. I didn't think she was believably portrayed, either. I just really didn't buy that she was the type to be a med student, or that she was as intelligent as she supposed to be. In that way I'll always love Rose, Donna, and Amy - because they're so delightfully imperfect. It's not like I hated her...it's just, the character never made me care much.

And I did rather dislike her crush on the doctor...it just seemed so out of the blue.
