I feel like Martha was a wasted character but not for any of the reasons listed here. On paper, she should have been awesome - everything she did was badass and she remained badass despite her unrequited love (which always came off as completely realistic to me, I mean if David Tennant pitched up in a time machine and offered to take you on the ultimate gap year after snogging you, wouldn't you be a little in love?) and yes, I think she got shafted by the writing and RTD's lingering obsession with Rose BUT I just think Freema was a terrible actress. She didn't have the depth or the charm to pull off the-companion-after-Rose and certainly not to make Martha Jones as wonderful as she was supposed to be. I don't know, YMMV but that was always my problem with her.

On a side note, RTD's treatment of Martha makes me very worried for Moffat's treatment of the companion after Amy. History could repeat itself very easily, one feels.

I don't get the feeling Moffat is as attached to Amy as RTD was to Rose. I am more worried about what Moffat is going to do in regards to River because River is the character he's made out to be "OMGSUPERSPECIALAWESOME" and I can already feel that he loves that character more then any other.

This is why writers need to be careful about how attached they get to a character.
