Someone summed up the whole mess in one sentence at afterellen.
She said, if this was written by a straigh man it'd be considered the most insulting shitty movie ever, but since it's made by a lesbian it's a honest and touching portrait of a normal family.

Win.

I haven't seen the movie, but awesome comment. I hate how something that's kind of awful in some way, no matter who made it or what it's about, can get a pass or even be commended because of the gender, orientation, ethnicity etc. of its creator. Bad things are bad.

I genuinely agree with this statement.

It's the same difference as a lesbian calling herself a dyke and a straight person calling her one.

In a way, I actually agree with that. People who actually belong to the same group as the characters can be better equipped to write from that perspective and handle tough subject matter and cliches, whereas outsiders can lack the same perspective and can do well to step a bit more carefully.

But yeah, I don't like it when people get a free pass just because they belong to the group they're depicting, either. Being LGBT doesn't give you amnesty from having your work called out, especially when a lot of the homophobia complaints come from other LGBT people.
