That would be great if there were a similarly large number of movies about stable happy lesbian couples as there are stable happy straight couples, or a similarly large number of movies about nice lesbians falling in love as there are about nice straight people falling in love. But there aren't. And there's also this idea in the culture that all a lesbian needs is a good fucking and she'd be right back to the cock.

THIS.

Maybe it's because I don't watch any romance flicks, but wouldn't a stable happy couple not have much room for movie-style drama and be really dull? I haven't seen this movie yet but I thought the infidelity thing was pretty central to the plot. As far as I know this was never supposed to be a run-of-the-mill romance movie but with lesbians...

Not if they were like, vaguely in the background of a movie about some other people, which straight couples are all the time. Not if the movie were really about their kids, and the parents just happened to be lesbians.

I'm not saying that this particular movie needed to not have drama about the couple. What I'm saying is, there isn't a balanced portrayal of lesbian relationships in culture, so this film stands out more. It's like, yes, there are totally black criminals, but there are also black businessmen; yet there aren't many black businessmen characters on TV, but tons of black criminals.

AMEN.

Yes, THIS.

As soon as I heard one of the women cheated on her wife with the sperm donor I knew I didn't want to have anything to do with this movie.

I was really disturbed by all the movie's award nominations.

That would be great if there were a similarly large number of movies about stable happy lesbian couples as there are stable happy straight couples,

I can't honestly recall a movie where there was a stable straight family made up of a mom and dad, no step parents and kids and they were sane, well adjusted with no problems, such as money or drugs, inside or outside the house and they were like this through out the entire movie. I can't recall just a straight couple like that.

Can you give me any examples of such a movie?

[identity profile] jlh.livejournal.com 2011-03-27 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Lots of kids movies, for starters, like Spy Kids. Romantic comedies where the sister/best friend is married and the hero/heroine stares longingly at them and says, "I wish I could have a relationship like yours." Caper films with a couple at the center, like the entire series of Hart to Hart or, reaching back a little, the Thin Man movies. TONS of comedies, like I Love You Man.

And who says that there can't be a stable couple where there are step parents? Or a stable couple that struggles with problems that are outside the couple, like money or similar? You're restricting the list much, much more than I did in what I was saying.

I'm not saying the movie with the stable couple needs to be ABOUT that couple, or that this particular couple needed to be happy all the way through. What I'm saying is that there are lots of portrayals of stable happy straight couples, so many that their just wallpaper at the back of other events, but those kinds of couples are so rarely gay or lesbian. So we don't have that huge backlog of lesbian and gay happy couples to balance this movie.

I'm sorry, I don't even have a horse in this race, but this post really made me laugh. "Lots of movies, for startes, like Spy Kids." Lol,wat? That movie is old, and so RANDOM in this context. It's a mainstream kids movie, what does it have to do with this edgy indie flick for adults?? But then, just to make Spy Kids look relevant, you bring up Hart to Hart??? That show is 30 years old! I'm 30, and I had to google it! And then after talking about a 30 year-old TV show, you say "OR reaching back a little..." LOL! Reaching back *more* than 30 years is "a little"?! I think this post is a good argument for the point you were arguing *against*.

You're still an epic cunt for deleting that epic Giles mpreg from the face of the internet. That act of sabotage really shoots your argument right out of the ater.

[identity profile] valenciapilgrim.livejournal.com 2011-03-27 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Uh, wow, that is some strong lanuguage, buddy. And also, you have me confused with someone else who is more epic and cuntier than I. I don't write much fan fic, and I have never written a Giles mpreg, but I wish I had written something that would produce such vitriol were it to be taken down. I am also not an MOD of any sort of comunity, able to take things down...?

+1. Thank you.

So out of curiosity, since things like this *do* happen, what would be a non-offensive way of showing it? Because it seems that there's this push to show the reality of individuals but when filmmakers do, it's seen as making some broad statement about whatever group the individuals happen to fall into.

Really that's more a problem with the viewers, that they can't remove an individual from a vague group, but I admittedly haven't seen the movie.
