(Anonymous) 2011-03-26 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)Julianne Moore's character wasn't an example of "lesbians are awful", she was an example of "lesbians are human". She cheated on her wife. That's totally unreflective of her parenting. In fact, they were both really good parents, the entire movie. It would be a) unrealistic, and b) boring to write an entire movie about two perfect people who never do anything wrong ever, all for the sake of portraying gay parents as awesome and flawless. It's far better to portray them as normal, because isn't that what having a family is supposed to be? Normal? The genitals of the person you love have no bearing on what kind of parent you are, and that was part of the message of the movie: they were just normal people, who love their kids and make mistakes and have needs and wants and feelings.
Her reasoning for cheating was selfish and childish, yes, but is there such a thing as "good" reasoning for that kind of betrayal? She didn't choose a man because he had a dick, she chose him because he was paying attention to her. And I think it's revealing of a selfish nature that you say no one in the entire movie should have forgiven her. They were her family - were they supposed to stop loving her?
People do bad things, and, when you love them, you often forgive them. It's just how human nature works. Maybe that's the lesson you should have taken away from the movie.

I'm not saying that this particular movie needed to not have drama about the couple. What I'm saying is, there isn't a balanced portrayal of lesbian relationships in culture, so this film stands out more. It's like, yes, there are totally black criminals, but there are also black businessmen; yet there aren't many black businessmen characters on TV, but tons of black criminals.

As soon as I heard one of the women cheated on her wife with the sperm donor I knew I didn't want to have anything to do with this movie.
I was really disturbed by all the movie's award nominations.

I can't honestly recall a movie where there was a stable straight family made up of a mom and dad, no step parents and kids and they were sane, well adjusted with no problems, such as money or drugs, inside or outside the house and they were like this through out the entire movie. I can't recall just a straight couple like that.
Can you give me any examples of such a movie?

And who says that there can't be a stable couple where there are step parents? Or a stable couple that struggles with problems that are outside the couple, like money or similar? You're restricting the list much, much more than I did in what I was saying.
I'm not saying the movie with the stable couple needs to be ABOUT that couple, or that this particular couple needed to be happy all the way through. What I'm saying is that there are lots of portrayals of stable happy straight couples, so many that their just wallpaper at the back of other events, but those kinds of couples are so rarely gay or lesbian. So we don't have that huge backlog of lesbian and gay happy couples to balance this movie.

Really that's more a problem with the viewers, that they can't remove an individual from a vague group, but I admittedly haven't seen the movie.
