I can't speak for others, but for me, fandom is my safe place that allowed me to detach myself from my religion. I grew up in a religion where ALL my friends and family believed in the same thing. At school, we stuck together. We even lived in an neighborhood that was predominantly populated by members of my religion. Deep down, I didn't really believe it, was sick of the hypocrisy of it all and was tired of tamping down my critical thinking, logic and reason in order to be part of it. But the idea of losing everyone (because in this religion, if you question, you are an apostate, and everyone is looking at you to make sure you don't sin. If you do, they are encouraged to tell on you, and you can get kicked out) was terrifying. Then, I moved away from family and friends and was feeling lonely and found a fandom online. Fandom gave me the courage to break free.

I'm sorry that you find it intolerant. To me, it's been just the opposite, and though I have found many friends in fandom who are Christians (and Jews, and Muslims and even a Buddhist or two) I have found that we can agree to disagree quite well. I try to put any anti-religion things I want to express on my journal behind a cut, warning for it so that they have to actively seek it out if they want to read it.

TL;DR, I personally found fandom to be much more tolerant than Christianity was.
