Always remember that you aren't obligated to tell anyone anything if you aren't comfortable with that. And if people judge or condemn you for being of a particular faith before getting to know you first, they're hardly worth your time, attention, or consideration.

i'm an atheist but i don't mind people being part of a religion so long as they don't use it as a weapon against other people

if you want to pray to god or believe in something that gives them hope, then that's just fine

but the second they use it to oppress other people?

edit: i have a few religious friends and it makes me uncomfortable when they've personally done nothing wrong and people attack them solely for being religious

I think it's the anonymity of the 'net (which gives people a chance to say something about anything which has been bothering them without fear of reprisal) which lets the animosity show in fandom. A lot of people have had bad experiences because of the religious views of the people around them. Recognizing that will take you a few steps along the way.

Recognizing that you have a responsibility to be active in how you view your faith, and not passively accept either the tenets of the organizations which profess to support it, or the criticisms of those who dislike it, will take you even farther.

Being uncomfortable is actually good for you.

I definitely understand this feeling. It gets a little frustrating, because even among the people who do know my religious preference... it's treated like something to be mocked or put down.

If you're not religious, that's completely your prerogative, but I hardly think it's fair to judge me just because I am.

I'm intolerant of intolerance, if you catch my drift. I don't mind people having their beliefs, but if those beliefs hurt (directly or indirectly) other people, I will take issue with them. This extends to supporting a church that funds shit like Prop 8.

Yeah, I hear you, OP. I mean, I haven't seen too much hate toward my religion in particular, but I always get uncomfortable when I see people insulting or making fun of religions. Which seems depressingly common. :\

Hang in there, OP! I totally understand what you mean, and unfortunately, I don't think it's going to change anytime soon. No one should ever have to be ashamed of their beliefs, even if people who use Internet anonymity to feel tough say differently.

Is there anyone else who thinks that this is because fandom is way more international than people think? I'm European, and I'm frequently creeped out by how many American users openly talk about Jesus and praying and whatnot.

You should never feel ashamed about your faith, especially when there's nothing to be ashamed of. Lumping all Christians together as hate-spewing, violent individuals is like saying all Muslims are terrorists. It's gross, inaccurate, and makes that person look like a huge hypocrite. If they really are your friends then they will accept you for who you are, and if they scorn you because of it then you are much better off without them.

maybe you should take some time away from your fandom friends and try to look at your religion from an outside point of view, as in those who have been and continue to be persecuted. yeah, your religion is not to blame for all the shit in the world (actually, that's debatable, but I digress), but the people in power (for this example, I'm using conservative Republicans in the US) claim to be Christian one moment, and then try to push highly misogynistic, damaging, downright oppressive laws through government. thus, it's not a surprise that some people will immediately hate on religion, when there are people who have power and use it to do bad shit and also happen to flaunt their devoutly religious status ... to their benefit.

I don't mind my religious fans in fandom as long as they do not act hatefully and don't try to press it on me.

Course, I'd rather not hear anything about religion at all but if its part of their life I won't bite if they talk about it.
