It can hard to be understanding on the net sometimes. I can even get -why- (some anyway) even the most vitriolic and horrible christian can act that way too since it's what they -think- is ultimately the truth and that their god knows best from a certain interpretation, usually having been raised to think that way all their life. Such opinions and beliefs can't go unchallenged though and never should be left alone. Bigotry is sometimes what people try to hide under the guise of religion but some people honestly believe that which is of course terrifying. These people ultimately either have to be converted to a better more moral sect or de-converted all together.

Unfortunatly back lash will happen no matter what OP if you do show your beliefs and opinions. This is true of almost -any- opinion even. Not 'may' happen, will. Eventually. The efforts will depend on you to set yourself apart from more unsavoury people who follow christianity. It may not be fair but when you claim to be a christian it's also almost like claiming to be of a political party for some- but yours is wider ranging in terms of beliefs and actions and is even more unco-ordinated.

While I'm pretty sure there will be people who may attack you online it can help in a way to understand why too OP, wanking is never pretty but people are not always wankers for no reason and while what I did at points has been unfair to people who otherwise meant well and it's really not an excuse no matter how upset I was- there can be more to people than we know, including aggressive people or people who suddenly seem to be aggressive at the word religion. We're not at our best on-line all the time and for many the net can be the only place they can vent without fear of reprisal. It was for me for a while.

I'm sorry though if as otherwise being a good person your feelings are hurt though or scared. Just be prepared. In some debates some excellent points can be made and you can make new discoveries for both parties involved- like not all atheists being amoral hooligans who worship Darwin or all christians being complete mooks who get off on the idea of people burning in hell.

Being taken out of our comfort zone and being challenged isn't necessarily a bad thing. I mean obviously it doesn't always feel that -nice- at first but sometimes it's for the best.

So uh... TL;DR good luck OP I guess. Things will be different but overall while there will be a transition period whatever happens might even be a good thing... eventually.

b) leaving that same religion which had caused me internal strife -and even the nicest of christians who meant well and were trying to convert me just not -getting- it. Plus sometimes talking about their religion sometimes online just made me cringe and was almost a trigger for me. I still cringe a little true but I've less of a hair trigger temper about it. Even when it's not good for you, leaving a religion is hard and even the most well meaning thing can just set a person off. This could also be true for someone who has had personal bad experiences with it from members or from what they hear happening in the wider world regarding it.
