I'm an atheist surrounded by hateful, hipocritical, close-minded, intolerant, comformist, religious fundamentalists who spend half of their time condeming others for shit they do and the other half condeming others for who they are.
I live in an overly conservative, overly catholic, unbelievably backwards country that would shame the Southern US in all their fundy infamy.

I don't like religion, but I understand you OP. I am also nervous to speak my views on religion here at home, because I am afraid that I will be harrassed or even beaten for saying such things. It's happened before, mind you. So, I can only do the one thing: Sit down and bite my tongue as everyone around spills out homophobic, mysoginist, transphobic bullshit, while giving each other's ego a lovely stroke because they are such good Christians~~

tl;dr Fuck you, OP. Religion has been the cause -- and is still the cause -- of many of the terrible bullshit that has plagued our world. You feel bad 'cause your fandom friends do not like Religion ? I was almost killed for not being religious. Who has the worst of it now?

NOooooooooo, people are the cause. Eliminate all religion from the world and, guess what? Something else is the cause. Religion/politics/race are an excuse and a justification, not the cause. Claiming otherwise is just passing the buck.

Do you really think people would be hateful towards homosexuals if there wasn't a force telling them that it is sinful? Do you honestly believe that people would not be hostile towards other religions if their own didn't tell them to do so?

No, no, you are underestimating the power that the threat of eternal damnation has on people. Religious teachings have created such a divide between people that you just can't remove the blame from it. Religion is the instigator, at times, of horrible crimes and even wars.

When you set the standards of what's good and what's evil, you'll have the 'good' fraction turn hostile against the 'evil' faction. Religion is not without blame. It fuels the ideas of bigots all over the world; it serves as a reason for them to act upon their bigotry; and as a mind-numbing narcotic to stop the followers from seeing and stopping the bigotry.

Uh, yeah. I'm in Asia, and non-religious homophobia runs rampant. Among other things, there's the belief that GLBT people are being unfilial / dishonoring their parents by not producing little kids / putting their own selfish interests ahead of that of their family or community etc.
