Is there anyone else who thinks that this is because fandom is way more international than people think? I'm European, and I'm frequently creeped out by how many American users openly talk about Jesus and praying and whatnot.

Me too! Or, rather, it's really hard for me to relate to that stuff.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-26 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Why would that creep you out? I can understand feeling awkward, but creeped out?

[identity profile] avatarmn.livejournal.com 2011-03-27 06:02 am (UTC)(link)
Why does someone being so open and emotional about having an imaginary friend creep you out? You really need to ask that?

[identity profile] theditz.livejournal.com 2011-03-26 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Naw, I wouldn't say creeped out, but I admit it feels a bit awkward. If someone were to say "I will pray for you" here, everyone would probably go "uhh, what?". It's just not something you do or hear much about.

[identity profile] anamatics.livejournal.com 2011-03-27 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
Just say thank you, it really means they're keeping you in their thoughts.

[identity profile] theditz.livejournal.com 2011-03-27 08:49 am (UTC)(link)
I know it's done with good intentions, just like someone shaking your hand to greet. The problem is when you are in a country where the custom is to bow instead of shake hands. No matter how good your intentions are, the other person is probably going to think you have not bother to research the norms of their culture.

same here

[identity profile] oflittlebrain.livejournal.com 2011-03-26 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
seriously? i want to move to fucking europe

[identity profile] theditz.livejournal.com 2011-03-27 08:56 am (UTC)(link)
Be careful though, Europe isn't exactly one country. You're in for a surprise if you move to, say, Italy instead of Estonia or Sweden.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-26 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I think so...
At least where I live, although it's a christian country, atheists are becoming the majority and the rare religious friends I have keep their faith to themselves, never bringing it up. Admittedly it's a bit exotic to see people on the internet praise Jesus left and right like it's a genuine identity thing to them.

[identity profile] emelethaine.livejournal.com 2011-03-26 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
*adds to list of reasons to move to Europe in the future*

(Anonymous) 2011-03-26 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
As an European you should know better than to lump us together :(

Although we're generally doing a good job separating church from government, all the countries still have their share of religious crazies.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-26 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
It differs depending on where in Europe you are, but at least western Europe has a lot of nominally religious people who only go to church because it's a Christmas tradition. Americans actually believe in Christ.

[identity profile] wrestlingdog.livejournal.com 2011-03-26 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, I definitely know a lot of Chreasters.

Hell, I'm American and Episcopalian and I get creeped out by it.
pantswarrior: Spock and Bones go "WTF". Unsurprisingly, at their captain. (wtf)

[personal profile] pantswarrior 2011-03-27 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Man, me too. I'll gladly pray for anyone who ASKS for prayer over an issue in their lives, but I know some people who, if they see anything that goes wrong with one of their friends, will be like "Oh you poor persecuted child of God! I will pray for mercy and healing and peace for your soul, amen!" and I can't help but kind of... recoil.

[identity profile] tee-sama.livejournal.com 2011-03-26 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't say creeped out, more like weirderd out, but then again I'm Czech. Someone being religious is rare in the places I interact in.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-27 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. I don't even mean "religious crazies", as someone above said. For example, I had some shit going on in my personal life and I wrote about it in my lj. My flist knows I'm not religious, but most of the comments I got were along the lines of "I will pray for you". I know everyone meant well, but I was a little weirded out by it.

I guess I wouldn't say I'm creeped out by it, more like uncomfortable at times.

[identity profile] manatees.livejournal.com 2011-03-27 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Why is it creepy? I'm European (well, British), I'm a Christian, my faith is a part of my life and therefore it gets talked about openly. Things that are a part of your life tend to get talked about, that's how it works.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-27 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
because no one else really wants to hear about it? compare it to being in the presence of someone constantly talking about ufo conspiracies. creepy and awkward.

Actually I think it's what the anon said. Most of religious people I know keep their faith for themselves and their church.

Yes!

I'm Scandinavian, and, dude, keep that shit to yourself. I don't want to know what you do when you're alone.

We can talk about sex and whatever, but religion is something you keep to yourself. If you talk about Jesus and praying, I will think you're loony.

[identity profile] miss-kate18.livejournal.com 2011-03-27 09:58 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, me too.

Where I live, plenty of people are religious (the majority are Christian or Catholic, but there's a healthy proportion of Muslims and people of the Jewish faith). They have their beliefs, but it's quite uncommon for people to actually speak about it in public - except for the ones shouting on street corners.
