Every group that stands for good and noble and upright things has oodles of people who claim to belong to that group for quick short-cut credibility. Which, naturally, pisses off everyone who's paying attention because of the hypocrisy. So people who just think kind and reasonable things like, gee, guys, we shouldn't torture puppies, get lumped in with the extremists that make everyone make fun of PETA.
The best thing you can do as a person of faith in fandom is to walk the walk. The unreasonable people will get pissed off because you're not adhering to their conceptions of you and the reasonable ones will appreciate it. (there are some reasonable people on the internet, I hear rumors.) I think there's a verse in Timothy, something, to the effect of "Respond to questions with kindness and respect; if your conscience is clean, people who see the good things you do will be embarrassed on their behalf."
