I think it's the anonymity of the 'net (which gives people a chance to say something about anything which has been bothering them without fear of reprisal) which lets the animosity show in fandom. A lot of people have had bad experiences because of the religious views of the people around them. Recognizing that will take you a few steps along the way.

Recognizing that you have a responsibility to be active in how you view your faith, and not passively accept either the tenets of the organizations which profess to support it, or the criticisms of those who dislike it, will take you even farther.

Being uncomfortable is actually good for you.

[identity profile] kanjo-girl.livejournal.com 2011-03-26 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. Being out your comfort zone is rather healthy, especially if you're religious. Or, in this case, a Christian.

Daaaang. I didn't know a religious secret could create so much wank.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-26 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you new here? Because this wank so far is honestly quite tame compared to some other religious secrets.

[identity profile] kanjo-girl.livejournal.com 2011-03-26 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess I've decided to be ignorant about it till now. No, I'm not new here, bb.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-26 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I can certainly understand that sentiment. And me asking "are you new here?" wasn't meant to be rude or confrontational, but rather a genuine question. It's hard to convey tone on the internet sometimes.

[identity profile] kanjo-girl.livejournal.com 2011-03-26 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry about that. Didn't know if you meant to be mean or not, but thought I'd answer it anyway.

Except some religious people get shit and even violence for their religion ALL THE TIME. I'm agnostic now, but if you really believe that I was never called out or "uncomfortable" growing up muslim in a white, Christian country you're kidding yourself.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-27 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
Anon is talking about Christianity not Islam. And they are talking about tenets of one's religion that preach things like homophobia or misogyny, not the basic core of the religion itself.

[identity profile] glansbilde.livejournal.com 2011-03-27 09:46 am (UTC)(link)
No. Anon used "religion" the entire time and never once specified Christianity.

[identity profile] avatarmn.livejournal.com 2011-03-27 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
Nowhere did anon assume that fandom was the first and only source of religious discomfort. -1

[identity profile] glansbilde.livejournal.com 2011-03-27 09:47 am (UTC)(link)
And nowhere did I say they did.

[identity profile] avatarmn.livejournal.com 2011-03-27 01:09 pm (UTC)(link)
You just said that you'd already experienced discomfort, as if they were saying you hadn't... So...

[identity profile] glansbilde.livejournal.com 2011-03-27 01:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Because they said that being mean to religous people on the net is okay, because being uncomfortable is good for them. My point is: some of us don't need Fandom to feel uncomfortable about religion so the point is fairly meaningless and more of an excuse to be an asshat than anything.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-27 01:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Would you have become agnostic if you lived some place where your faith was never questioned? Would you have second-guessed the dogma of your elders if you'd never heard anything but praise for it your whole life?

Yes, I mostly was thinking Christianity, since the cross in the secret implied that the OP is a Christian, but I stand by my assertion. When it comes to matters of faith, being uncomfortable is good for you. It makes you think much harder about what you truly believe. (Which is why the more fanatical sects and cults try so very hard to make sure you ascribe any criticism to prejudice on the part of the critic.)

I will allow, however, that there is a huge difference between being uncomfortable and being beat up, or being denied work, housing, or other vital requirements of life because you are in a religious minority. A bop on the nose is not the same thing as a fist in the face.

Yes. I did not become agnostic because of atheists. I became agnostic because of the physical and emotional abuse I suffered for being an effeminate gay man in a Muslim family. That's the reason. In fact, the more people critised me and yelled shit on the streets and what not, the more defensive over Islam I got. The more people sterotyped me and made me uncomfortable and ashamed over my culture and religion the more I believed that Islam was right. I don't think being cruel and stereotyping(YOU ALL HATE GAYS etc) is helpful at all if your goal is to turn people away from religion. That's my opinion on this, basically.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-27 02:11 pm (UTC)(link)
My goal isn't to turn people away from religion. I know people for whom religion is a source of great comfort, as well as a motivation to get out and actually do good things for others, and do so without feeling the need to criticize beliefs which they do not share.

If I have a goal, I suppose it's to encourage people to think about what they believe. Discomfort has a certain utility in that process. My original comment was aimed at the OP, of course, whom I thought was being a bit whiny over encountering different views. (Reminded me of my nieces and nephews when they were adolescents, actually, and needed a few new ideas to challenge their assumptions.)

What you experienced goes far beyond being uncomfortable, however, especially since you were getting abuse (particularly physical abuse) from both sides. I hope that your life is better now.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-27 02:28 pm (UTC)(link)
particularly physical abuse

Excuse me?

I might be reading something that's not there, but are you implying that physical abuse is somehow worse than any other sort of abuse?

(Anonymous) 2011-03-27 02:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not the anon who said this, but it kind of is. It's worse to be physically assaulted on the street than having someone call you something racist for example(verbal abuse). And physical abuse ALWAYS contains emotional abuse as well. So basically:

Physical abuse = emotional + physical damage.
Emptional abuse = emotional damage.

I think it's fair to say that being frequently physically attacked on the street is worse than frequent name calling.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-27 04:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, then, we'll have to agree to disagree on that. :(

(Anonymous) 2011-03-28 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
You have obviously never been tortured before. Which is a good thing, really, I hope you never do.

[identity profile] glansbilde.livejournal.com 2011-03-27 02:28 pm (UTC)(link)

Well, I can agree that it works for OP, especially since they're Christian in what is more likely a Christian country if you think about it like that. I read it as people being mean and cruel: not just critising religon. OP said that there was a lot of "hate" and "intolerence" which made it seem like people were being crueler than just having discussions about problematic issues.

I don't know. The physical abuse was from my father(who is a Muslim) though. Which is why I started being unable to believe in this religion that supposedly said I deserved to get the crap beaten out of me for being femme. Other people, atheists and Chirstians, weren't violent towards me. Just cruel. "We don't wan't you fucking muslims here, go back to your country!" is a popular one. Which I can definitely see as being "uncomfortable". It's not abuse it's someone making me uncomfortable about my religion. If they pointed out that Islam is a sexist religion I wouldn't be uncomfortable. That's only how I feel about it. I think your definition of uncomfortable may be a bit different from mine.
