My goal isn't to turn people away from religion. I know people for whom religion is a source of great comfort, as well as a motivation to get out and actually do good things for others, and do so without feeling the need to criticize beliefs which they do not share.

If I have a goal, I suppose it's to encourage people to think about what they believe. Discomfort has a certain utility in that process. My original comment was aimed at the OP, of course, whom I thought was being a bit whiny over encountering different views. (Reminded me of my nieces and nephews when they were adolescents, actually, and needed a few new ideas to challenge their assumptions.)

What you experienced goes far beyond being uncomfortable, however, especially since you were getting abuse (particularly physical abuse) from both sides. I hope that your life is better now.

I might be reading something that's not there, but are you implying that physical abuse is somehow worse than any other sort of abuse?

I'm not the anon who said this, but it kind of is. It's worse to be physically assaulted on the street than having someone call you something racist for example(verbal abuse). And physical abuse ALWAYS contains emotional abuse as well. So basically:

Physical abuse = emotional + physical damage.
Emptional abuse = emotional damage.

I think it's fair to say that being frequently physically attacked on the street is worse than frequent name calling.

Well, I can agree that it works for OP, especially since they're Christian in what is more likely a Christian country if you think about it like that. I read it as people being mean and cruel: not just critising religon. OP said that there was a lot of "hate" and "intolerence" which made it seem like people were being crueler than just having discussions about problematic issues.

I don't know. The physical abuse was from my father(who is a Muslim) though. Which is why I started being unable to believe in this religion that supposedly said I deserved to get the crap beaten out of me for being femme. Other people, atheists and Chirstians, weren't violent towards me. Just cruel. "We don't wan't you fucking muslims here, go back to your country!" is a popular one. Which I can definitely see as being "uncomfortable". It's not abuse it's someone making me uncomfortable about my religion. If they pointed out that Islam is a sexist religion I wouldn't be uncomfortable. That's only how I feel about it. I think your definition of uncomfortable may be a bit different from mine.
