No matter how close a friend was to me, and no matter how devastating the event that made them decide to run off, I'd be utterly furious if they disappeared for months and could have been dead for all I knew and then returned all smiles and acted as though nothing had happened after I'd been worrying about them for so long.
That sums it up pretty well. And also the bit where you said that Kat wasn't even able to comfort Annie after finding out what had happened. Neither Kat's negative or positive emotions had a chance to come out; it's no wonder she was feeling a mess.

Kat was actually pretty mature in being able to lay out her emotions to Annie straightforwardly. I don't think she approached it very well, but she was trying to be reasonable.
