I agree. I initially liked his laid-back attitude, but his sexism was too much to bear. And when he told Franziska to stay in the kitchen or something along that line, I just couldn't possibly like him.

I've heard that he wasn't as sexist in the original version (he told her that the grown-ups are talking, which is still condescending, but kind of acceptable given that Franziska is 19 and not even of age in Japan) but well, I'm playing the European release, and he's sexist there, so yeah.

And even without the sexism, I didn't really get any "pairing vibes" from Mia and Diego. Maybe I didn't read carefully enough and missed something.

I never get why people love Diego so much seeing how sexist he is. And the thing is, I don't think he was supposed to be a great person in-universe either.

[identity profile] flutingfrenzy.livejournal.com 2011-03-30 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Replaying the game recently, I started thinking that maybe people (in the fandom) were taking their cues from Maya. She was just so insistent throughout the last chapter of the case that he was a good person that Phoenix even started arguing with him when he admitted that his plan had been based on pride rather than selflessness. And on that note, the game ended, so that was the takeaway.

[identity profile] miss_prince.livejournal.com 2011-03-30 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree somewhat. I'm actually glad we only saw a little bit of their interaction, and like you said, she was young, and it was her first case, and she had reasons to be insecure. Because of that, fandom can extrapolate a more equal relationship between them in the months we didn't see.

But I also think that if we HAD seen those months, he wouldn't have been any less chauvinistic.

[identity profile] fairhearing.livejournal.com 2011-03-30 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
He wasn't localized properly for a Western audience. That's kind of what it comes down to. :/

In Japan, he seemed charming and lightly teasing, not like a fucking pig.

[identity profile] croik.livejournal.com 2011-03-30 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I disagree with this. I played the Japanese version first and I was disgusted even then. He belittled every woman he came across and half his "rules" had to point out what a man he was. And Mia was just as insipid about it.

Will never understand his appeal.

[identity profile] fairhearing.livejournal.com 2011-03-30 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm saying, from my understanding, and from what my Japanese Friend Who Plays Videogames told me, he didn't really spark that reaction the Japanese fandom. Her opinion is that his behavior was not seen as sexist because the feminist movement there has been different in what's been focused on and so forth. I don't feel qualified to comment on that, but if it was due to culture clash, they should have localized him to however he was meant to be received. IIRC they did this with all the boob jokes re: Mia, which in Japan are kind of playful and silly but that in the West are gross and demeaning.

I agree with you, but (and trust me, i'm not saying this makes it right), you have to remember the cultural differences. It originally came from Japan, and wether people like to admit it or not, women (sadly) get put in that sort of situation more often than they should.

[identity profile] lljscrawls.livejournal.com 2011-03-30 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I REALLY need to replay T&T. I let a friend of mine borrow it two years ago, and I haven't seen it since given that he takes forever to play games. :/ I don't remember feeling horribly offended by him when I played -- I remember thinking that he was a douche when I was facing him in court, and that annoyed me -- but then again, it's literally been years since I played T&T. I don't remember the sexism, but then, that also doesn't mean it wasn't there. All I do remember is that he called Mia "kitten" a lot, but I took that more of just a pet name rather than a sexist remark . . . but then, it could easily be taken as a sexist remark too (especially back in . . . I think it was the 50s? Wasn't it a way to be condescending toward women in particular back then?) . . .

Hm. Well, one thing I do remember is being extremely frustrated with Maya when she was all "NOOOOO, DON'T HUUUUURT HIIIIIIIM" during the last case, because I thought he needed to be brought to justice, damn it. But other than that, TL;DR, I just need to replay this case again, 'cause yeah. =/

(I will say, though, that Godot did seem to genuinely love Mia -- not in that case, but in the last case, when it was revealed that his entire hate campaign against Phoenix was out of grief over Mia's death, and how he only cut it out when he could see that Mia had genuinely passed the torch onto Phoenix or whatever. So, I ship them, but . . . yeah. I just need to replay that case. xD)

(Anonymous) 2011-03-30 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
OP, I completely agree with you, and I'm the sort who just sits back and laughs when the "omg thats ___ist!!1!" rage rolls in in a lot of fandoms as it seemed to do with Diego in T&T. In fact, I disliked Diego as a character, not only because of how mind-blowingly sexist he was for a character in that game, but also for how much of just a general ass he was (and this is coming from someone who likes the Gramaryes .__. )

(Anonymous) 2011-03-30 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe it has been too long since I played T&T, but I cannot remember considering him sexist, and I consider myself a feminist to some extent. Maybe I was blinded by OMG hot!, because that is something still think. So I could say I only like aesthetically, but not as a character. Wouldn't read fic, would watch art.

[identity profile] seiberwing.livejournal.com 2011-03-30 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I dunno if 'sexist' is the right word. Perhaps 'chauvinist'? He's one of those guys who likes women but thinks he needs to protect them when they really don't need his help.

Yes, Diego was a sexist dick.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-30 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
But he absolutely respected Mia.

You don't talk about someone like this unless you respect them:

Godot:
Ha...!

Godot:
So that's all you've got...
I knew you weren't tough
enough to finish this.

Phoenix:
Urk...

Godot:
Right now...
if Mia Fey were here...

Phoenix:
...!

Godot:
If Mia Fey were here...
She would have closed the
book on this case already.

[identity profile] cloud-riven.livejournal.com 2011-03-30 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Completely agree. Well, I do see the appeal for the pairing even if I don't ship it. I just happen to really hate Godot. Not just for his chauvinism, but also because he is a terrible idiot that was responsible for a largely preventable crime(s) in that last case in T&T.

And what the anon above said about his telling Fran to get back in the kitchen paraphrase thing. That also bugged the crap out of me. Oh, he doesn't like chicks who aren't swooning or submissive? Irritating. And how Maya still tried to protect him after he basically put her in a position to be a victim. That also bothered me.

[identity profile] seiberwing.livejournal.com 2011-03-30 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I love fanon Mia/Diego, with people writing how their personalities click together. It's cute.

Canon Mia and Diego, on the other hand, is problematic...and honestly I like it that way. Diego's a very flawed man and part of the end of the game is him having to confront his mistaken attributions and his chauvinism. Mia was just beginning to come into her own as a defense attorney (and looking at Nick, you can tell how much of a struggle it would be to keep your self-esteem even without watching people die in front of you) and they ran into a bit of a conflict there. Canonically, I think they never had a relationship but Diego had a mild thing for her, exacerbated by the martyr-complex-by-proxy he bestowed on her after her death.

[identity profile] euphonious-glow.livejournal.com 2011-03-31 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
As a character, Godot is interesting because of his flaws. I like analyzing the circumstances and psychology surrounding him in fic, even though I don't like him as a person. I think he didn't get as much character development as Edgeworth or Franziska, which is one of the problems. The other two prosecutors both have their jerkass qualities, but they are really well-rounded and have their sympathetic moments, too. And Lang from AAI has Godot-esque traits, but they're balanced out with his loyalty and bravery. Godot admits at the end that he was wrong, which is why I like to explore his character in the future.

But I totally agree. Part of me wonders if his relationship with Mia only happened in his mind, with a brain addled by poison. We never got to see this supposed epic love story...

(Anonymous) 2011-03-31 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
This doesn't even make sense. In case one of the game, Diego is not only referred to as Mia's boyfriend, but she shows complete willingness to risk giving up her badge--that thing she got to find the person that ruined her mom's life--in order to nail his killer to the wall.

Like or dislike the couple, it's all cool. But there's pretty obviously canon feelings there, and not just on Diego's end.

[identity profile] euphonious-glow.livejournal.com 2011-03-31 12:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I was only half serious. I know what the game shows. I just mean that there wasn't enough of the feelings on both sides, in my opinion. Not enough to interest me, at least.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-31 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
One sided Miego is my favorite Miego. Of course, this may be because I ship Mia with Lana...

[identity profile] angerfish.livejournal.com 2011-03-31 05:14 am (UTC)(link)
haha, this!

[identity profile] masked-creator.livejournal.com 2011-03-31 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
Armando really annoyed me. I never saw the chemistry between him and Mia either. I thought Godot was an asshole too but then at least it felt like he had more character. All his ranting and rage about Mia dying? It fell flat for me because Armando's relationship with Mia felt so flat and forced and was all flirting.

[identity profile] fearless-rabbit.livejournal.com 2011-03-31 08:43 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think this kind of behavior is okay in real life at all, but I really enjoyed the ship. I got the feeling that she was challenging his ideas about women, and that he was on his way to seeing that she could be strong... and then when he found out that she'd been murdered, he backslid and thought some douchebag killing her meant she couldn't have been strong. To me it's a tragic thing, because he gets back in those beliefs just because he can't accept that she's dead and there's nothing he can do (especially because the person who's actually at fault has already been sent to jail and probably executed).

Of course, that's just how I see it, and it's entirely possible that he never really changed in the least and looked down to Mia up until the day he died. But I never really felt I was supposed to take his sexism as okay? Seeing Mia as weak was what got him into that mess in the first place... Maybe I just see it how I want to, though.
