I don't think DA2 was dumbed down--if anything, I thought it was a lot more interesting than DA:O. DA:O was good, but it was fairly...bland. Unchallenging. Standard epic fantasy plot, pretty much. DA2's plot was about religion, politics, family, and ideology, which--aside from being a nice break from "visit three/four big locations to gather information/aid" thing that BW likes to do--I found more engaging. (Not that DA:O didn't have those elements, of course, but they were more central in DA2, imo.) As for playing on the console...really? People care about that sort of thing? I play on the PC, but I'm...pretty sure it's the same game either way.

Gotta disagree personally on the Qunari/elves thing, but I don't think you're alone in that opinion in the fandom.

There's elitists everywhere these days, sadly.

I couldn't agree more. As much as I love DA:O, its world and setting and so on - DA2 was just so much more interesting to me. I was more motivated to finish it was quickly as I could. I loved the family themes and (probably most of all) improved graphics and designs.

You pretty much put into words why I feel like DA2 was such a good break from Origins. I'll always love Origins-but the standard fantasy plot, the very obvious villain, they aren't as interesting to me as the implications of DA2.

Unfortunately, whenever you have a group of people who all enjoy doing a thing, some of them will always try to find ways to make themselves better than others within the group. So, yeah, you'll still come up against some snobs who look down on others for playing on console.

I've noticed so far that a lot of people complaining about DA:O vs DAII doesn't seem to like the style of one of the games. As you said, they're two different sorts of games.

I also never understood console wars or console vs. computer gaming. (I know of people's desire to feel like they're better than others, but it doesn't mean I understand it.)

I loved DA:O and I can't wait to play DAII because I love the world and who wants more of the same sort of story? I'm glad that they decided to go in a different direction. If they can keep going in different directions and still keep it good, I say more power to them.

Same here... First time I've seen people discussing about this I was totally "wait... The hell is going on here?!"
I don't know, maybe some pc gamers feel smarter because they change their hardware ecery time a new games comes out, so they can see the hairs on the character's ass? I'm taking a wild guess here, so... Meh *shrug*
Someone, explain this, please?

PC's have higher graphics, more memory, more hard disk space and with a keyboard more, and frankly better, controls. Simply put if a game is designed purely for the PC it could offer better graphics, a larger and seamlessly integrated world with a level of interaction in the world that consoles can't manage. With a console you're basically looking at "graphics, world, interaction" pick two.

I've heard that part of the argument is that computers are "better" because the systems are more powerful and therefore the games can be "harder." And therefore the people who play computer games are "better" because they can afford to update their computer systems more often (or buy whole new ones) and all of this is a lot more expensive than a console.

See, and then there are people like me who doesn't want to drop $2000 on a laptop because I don't have that sort of money, and that isn't the sort of gaming I grew up on. Also with the rate technology improves, I would have to buy a new computer or update it a lot more often than if I stuck to consoles.

But I also have no problem with people who do want to use their computer for gaming. It's your money, use it how you want to!

And to bring it back to Dragon Age... I kind of love the computer gamers for putting videos of the game up on YouTube. It's a whole lot easier for them. Also, screenshots for making icons is a whole lot easier for the computer version.

I'm just sad that I can't do the game mods on my 360 like they do with the computer version. (I can't be the only person who wanted to gay!romance Alistair and Morrigan.)

That is a myth. I'm using a video card from several generations ago that cost me $100 on a 4-year-old PC that cost maybe $800 and it can run the latest and greatest with little issue.

this

you only need top-of-the line computing for pc games if you're some sort of insane rts/fps/mmorpg powergamer. and usually not even then.

[identity profile] dethtoll.livejournal.com 2011-03-31 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
exactly

What's more is that we've sort of reached a plateau in terms of how much graphics whizbangery jumps ahead per period of time. Not to mention the fact that 80-90% of big-name games on PC the last few years are also on consoles, and therefore have to be at a minimum scaled to run on 5-year-old hardware as it is.

[identity profile] dorknessrising.livejournal.com 2011-03-31 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. This.

Hell, most of the time the console version is developed first (and often with the least-powerful of the platforms it's developed for), and then simply ported to the PC/Mac.

Actually, my computer is about 3-4 years out of date and still runs Dragon Age Origins and II wonderfully.

I... think... it's a waste getting a game developed primarily for the PC on a console. But I also feel that getting console-intended games for the PC is ridiculous. :x I have no problem with console gamers, I just... feel that in some cases, they're missing things. Especially with things like Dragon Age with its many mods, which can either add fan-made things to the game (whether it's something small like a new hairstyle or something large like a whole new party member) or can provide unofficial patches for some of the bugs that Bioware overlooked.

But if that's the version you play, OP, then I don't think less of you. And I'm certainly not ridiculous enough to blame you for the game being "dumbed down". If anything, the combat system got SO much better in this game. And that's really all I can see console-compatibility having an effect on. ♥
