Don't be wary. There's a lot of us in the fandom on console, and all in all it's a pretty welcoming place. There's room for all kinds.

I think changing the races was the best decision ever. Now elves actually look different! They're not short humans with pointy ears!

And hnnnnngh qunari
ext_212315: lol rawk (Bis..cuits?)

I still feel like the only person in the entire world who LOVES the new elves T_T

don't worry, RPGs have been dumbed down for console tards for years, DA2 is hardly a pioneer in that respect

(Anonymous) 2011-03-30 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Hope you didn't hurt yourself falling off that high horse of yours to lower yourself to the OPs level.

[identity profile] 131-di.livejournal.com 2011-03-31 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
mm, that burn is so fresh!

got any MTV jokes while you're at it

(Anonymous) 2011-03-30 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think DA2 was dumbed down--if anything, I thought it was a lot more interesting than DA:O. DA:O was good, but it was fairly...bland. Unchallenging. Standard epic fantasy plot, pretty much. DA2's plot was about religion, politics, family, and ideology, which--aside from being a nice break from "visit three/four big locations to gather information/aid" thing that BW likes to do--I found more engaging. (Not that DA:O didn't have those elements, of course, but they were more central in DA2, imo.) As for playing on the console...really? People care about that sort of thing? I play on the PC, but I'm...pretty sure it's the same game either way.

Gotta disagree personally on the Qunari/elves thing, but I don't think you're alone in that opinion in the fandom.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-30 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
There's elitists everywhere these days, sadly.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-30 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I couldn't agree more. As much as I love DA:O, its world and setting and so on - DA2 was just so much more interesting to me. I was more motivated to finish it was quickly as I could. I loved the family themes and (probably most of all) improved graphics and designs.

[identity profile] the-13th-bullet.livejournal.com 2011-03-30 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
You pretty much put into words why I feel like DA2 was such a good break from Origins. I'll always love Origins-but the standard fantasy plot, the very obvious villain, they aren't as interesting to me as the implications of DA2.

Unfortunately, whenever you have a group of people who all enjoy doing a thing, some of them will always try to find ways to make themselves better than others within the group. So, yeah, you'll still come up against some snobs who look down on others for playing on console.

[identity profile] iapetusneume.livejournal.com 2011-03-30 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I've noticed so far that a lot of people complaining about DA:O vs DAII doesn't seem to like the style of one of the games. As you said, they're two different sorts of games.

I also never understood console wars or console vs. computer gaming. (I know of people's desire to feel like they're better than others, but it doesn't mean I understand it.)

I loved DA:O and I can't wait to play DAII because I love the world and who wants more of the same sort of story? I'm glad that they decided to go in a different direction. If they can keep going in different directions and still keep it good, I say more power to them.

I... think... it's a waste getting a game developed primarily for the PC on a console. But I also feel that getting console-intended games for the PC is ridiculous. :x I have no problem with console gamers, I just... feel that in some cases, they're missing things. Especially with things like Dragon Age with its many mods, which can either add fan-made things to the game (whether it's something small like a new hairstyle or something large like a whole new party member) or can provide unofficial patches for some of the bugs that Bioware overlooked.

But if that's the version you play, OP, then I don't think less of you. And I'm certainly not ridiculous enough to blame you for the game being "dumbed down". If anything, the combat system got SO much better in this game. And that's really all I can see console-compatibility having an effect on. ♥

[identity profile] viserys.livejournal.com 2011-03-30 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
No one will think that. While we do have a few of the same kinda of idiots that lurk on Bioware Social, for the most part the fandom on LJ is vastly different, more understanding, more welcoming, more friendly, etc, than the forums. Get in here.

[identity profile] greatbriton.livejournal.com 2011-03-30 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. I've never been a part of the fandom until DA2 so I'm new to the fandom, and the places on LJ have been awesome and very friendly to everybody.

I'd agree. I recently joined the [livejournal.com profile] dragon_age comm here and have been quite liking it. I wasn't expecting folks to be as friendly as they are!

(Anonymous) 2011-03-30 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad there's someone else out there who doesn't hate it. :333 I've always played on console, loved DA:O, and didn't feel it was dumbed down (at least in terms of story/characterization, which is what I play for anyway). I am, however, steering clear of fandom this time for... other reasons.

BUT IN CONCLUSION YAY.

[identity profile] iapetusneume.livejournal.com 2011-03-30 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I always thought when people talked about differences it was in the gameplay, not the story. Then again I've always been big on the story so gameplay has never really mattered to me except when it's so difficult that I can't move forward.

[identity profile] blessedwithsick.livejournal.com 2011-03-30 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Avoid the Bioware forums, it IS very full of PC old-school RPG elitists, but there might be other areas of fandom that aren't so bad. Maybe an LJ comm?

Anywho, I just started the DAII today (was too busy to start it earlier, sadly) and I'm liking it so far. Definitely prefer the battle system in the new game already.

[identity profile] dethtoll.livejournal.com 2011-03-31 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Not to mention homophobes! Can't forget the BW forum homophobes!

[identity profile] reanimatrix.livejournal.com 2011-03-30 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I honestly HATED DA:O... I liked Zevran, Morrigan, and the dog, and that was about it. I hated that Loghain was obviously villainized for doing what I personally thought was the right thing (I feel the character who got compared to Loghain yesterday ALSO did the right thing, as both Cailan and the big person who got killed in that char's actions were ineffectual and more of a danger in power. HOW IS THAT FOR SPOILER LOW? :P) and you didn't have the choice to leave him to rule, and that you were stuck with Alistair but not with any other companion. I also felt the characters were a lot deeper and more interesting and more fun this time.

Eh, I play on PC, but I love consoles in general, so...

[identity profile] greatbriton.livejournal.com 2011-03-30 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Love DA2. I loved DAO as well but was always kind of put off by the combat. It felt slow and cumbersome. The biggest argument I find is that people feel the combat was dumbed down and to a point, I agree. It is far more button mash than DA:O was but I have so much more fun. *shrug*

The story just sucked me in though and I cannot get enough.

[identity profile] blessedwithsick.livejournal.com 2011-03-31 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
This is pretty much how I feel about the series. DAO was great, but I hated the battle system so much I just put it on the lowest difficulty setting so I could blow through battles to get to the story bits (at least on the console version--from what I've seen on the PC, I could've picked that up easier). I actually *enjoy* fighting in DA2 so far. Yeah, it's dumbed down, but feeling intelligent < having fun to me.

I was pretty disappointed in DA2, mostly because of the repetitiveness of the areas, combat, quests, etc. and the blandness of Anders, and was all, "WAHHHH THIS IS NOT A PROPER SEQUEL DAO WAS SO MUCH BETTER."

But then when I thought about replaying DAO, I thought about the Fade (uggggghh) and the endlessness of Orzammar (ugggggggghhhhh) and oh yeah I'd have to do the werewolf quest again (oh jesus see me through this), and I realized.....damn, this game was a slog. Say what you will about DA2, at least it wasn't a slog.

On the other hand, and this is embarrassing to admit but I feel like we're mostly girls here and I won't get shouted down: I missed Alistair. :( I had really enjoyed his character and the romance with him in DAO, and none of the male options in DA2 came close. I wish to God we could romance Varrick, because dude was AWESOME and I love him to bits, but I guess Gaider thinks dwarves are gross so that never was an option? Bah.

I am so with you with liking the new Qunari/Elves OP. The elves looked too much like humans in DAO imo, and I think the new Qunari look is pretty neat.

Also anyone who thinks less of you for playing on consoles is a douchebag trying to look superior, just ignore them. Plenty people play on consoles.
