I was pretty disappointed in DA2, mostly because of the repetitiveness of the areas, combat, quests, etc. and the blandness of Anders, and was all, "WAHHHH THIS IS NOT A PROPER SEQUEL DAO WAS SO MUCH BETTER."

But then when I thought about replaying DAO, I thought about the Fade (uggggghh) and the endlessness of Orzammar (ugggggggghhhhh) and oh yeah I'd have to do the werewolf quest again (oh jesus see me through this), and I realized.....damn, this game was a slog. Say what you will about DA2, at least it wasn't a slog.

On the other hand, and this is embarrassing to admit but I feel like we're mostly girls here and I won't get shouted down: I missed Alistair. :( I had really enjoyed his character and the romance with him in DAO, and none of the male options in DA2 came close. I wish to God we could romance Varrick, because dude was AWESOME and I love him to bits, but I guess Gaider thinks dwarves are gross so that never was an option? Bah.

When I played Awakenings, I missed Alistair but at least I had Anders around, and he was almost as funny, so I was satisfied. When I found out he was romancable in the second game, I was ecstatic.

...But the more I hear about Anders...yeah I miss Alistair.

I think Varrick isn't romancable less because of "ew dwarves" and more that Varrick/Bianca is OTP, though. (But if he was romancable he'd be my top choice.)

The game is definitely missing a "fun" male romance option

I think the reason why none of the romances and friendships in DAII came close to the ones in DA:O (especially Alistair) was because there wasn't that much dialog interaction aside from the "Companion" quests, fetching gifts, or the "Questioning Beliefs" quests between Hawke and the other characters. For me, all those dialogs and different options in them is what made me care about the characters in DA:O. I felt that my Warden was actually interacting and growing up with his/her companions. This was a big let down in DAII because I wanted my Hawke to interact with the characters more like the Warden did in DA:O. I don't know but I felt little forced to bother doing everything to actually interact with them...don't get me wrong, I did like everyone in DAII (except Anders) but I wished I could have just gone and talked to them randomly like Origins. I think this bothered me a little in Awakening too. But I'm wanting to believe all of this was probably due to time constraints like the rushed plot.

Also once my Warden started dating one of the characters in DA:O most of the characters made a comment about it and in DAII when Hawke dated someone there was just one cut scene with another character asking about the brief situation and Varric asking about it randomly later on but that's it. No one else commented about it which was a big disappointment. I thought I would have some hilarious moments like when Alistair was being picked on by everyone on the group for dating my Warden. :'(

At least they did manage to show some interaction between the other characters without Hawke's presence.

I wish to God we could romance Varrick, because dude was AWESOME and I love him to bits...

I'm a day late, but whatever. :)

I always had Varrick on my team, too! His banter with Merrill is a big part of why I love him so much -- he is so sweet to her. Aw, it's lovely. Especially compared to the horrifying things Anders says to her (what an ASSHOLE).

You're so right about the shallower companion interactions in DA2. I hated how you could only talk to them when the game let you, and then you had to travel to do it (because honestly, I'm not patient enough to enjoy sitting through three loading screens just to chat). That's also why I hated the romances in general -- I was like, "Who are these people? Why am I getting a flirt option with them now?" Whereas with Alistair (aw, sigh) the romance came much more gradually and organically.

Plus Anders' voice-actor was very flat, especially compared to Steve Valentine. Poor Anders really never had a chance.

I should replay Awakenings, since I've forgotten what Anders' personality was like in that game.
