I'm not the OP bit this seems a bit silly. I don't have to curse to express myself.
Do I curse? Yes. I was raised with curse words being used just as often as other words. Cursing is normal top me, and honestly, I don't see what's wrong with saying "fuck" or "shit" or whatever curse word happens to ocme out of someone's mouth. I'm just as likely to say "What the fuck is that?" as I am "What on Earth?" And goodness knows when I babysit I revert to saying things like "good golly miss molly" for some unknown reason.
I doubt the OP is saying they, or characters on television, need to swear. Rather I feel that they think it would be more natural (in their opinion) for a specific character to curse.

Because (American) society tells us those are bad words. You know, like we should hate gays and shun people with disabilities.*

*In case anyone thinks I'm being serious, I'm not. I'm just trying to point out how people can say we need to change the way society thinks, yet hold on to the notion that WORDS that really have a meaning anymore should be avoided.

I think the difference is that words like 'retard' and 'gay' are applied to people personally, used as an insult which hurts the feelings of those who the word applies to, who really have no choice in being what they are, whereas 'fuck, 'shit,' and 'damn' apply to no one in particular.

As far as words like 'bitch,' cunt' and 'dick,' yeah, because again, they apply to someone who can't help their sexual organs, I can see why people get offended, and I try not to use them in a way that offend.

But then again, you're probable one of those people who thinks that 'political correctness is getting out of hand,' don't you?

i have called men cunts before and I have called women dicks, for me, the use of either word has nothing to do with the anatomy it reffers to and everything to do with the flow of word and how it works in with what I was saying (which is actually why I have a tendency to call people cunts a lot more the k sound in dick ussually feels weird with what I'm saying).

I also don't get why if I call someone a cunt I'm sexist, but if I call someone a dick I'm not.

because women are still considered second-class citizens when compared to men. by calling someone a cunt, you're saying that being a woman is somehow worse than being a man.
calling someone a dick isn't considered sexist because men are a privileged group in society. you can't be as bad as a man because men are inherently good by virtue of their junk.

yeah, that just seems stupid. Also it could also be said that you're being sexist by not saying cunt because you are acknowledging that women are different than men and should be treated differently and thus you are agreeing with the fact that they are second class citizens instead of treating them equally to men.

You see, all this nitty gritty sexism in the subtext of words is complete bullshit. I will consider someone sexist if they're making judgments based on someone's gender, not if they're saying insults that just happen to refer to genitalia that are a common part of our society.

"Good golly, Miss Molly" is kind of amazing. I always like "Oh my great goodness," for some reason.

Seriously though, the kids I babysit swear more often than they have ever heard me swear in front of them.
I realized once they started toddling around I couldn't just keep biting off words so I decided to sounds like I was stuck in the 1920's for some reason :p

Yeah, I take some obscure joy in using decades-old exclamations, because I often feel that if you get a phrase that's foreign or dated enough, it can often have an impact similar to modern profanity, due to how much it stands out, except with a little bit more classiness than your standard "what the fuck" or "holy shit".

Ahaha, I love the swears that come about when babysitting. I'm a profanity machine, which makes it hard not to slip when I'm around my younger siblings, so I always end up with "what the fridge is that?" and "I don't give a fig-roll".

Yeah, more or less. But I have some other potentially pertinent information!

So here's the thing about cursing that is actually quite fascinating. For some odd reason, the words that we learn as "cuss words" are the words that elicited a hardwired response in our brains. We are programmed, as animals, to curse. So far, research points to our amygdala as the origin of this response. (That's extremely interesting because even for people who have "lost" the ability to feel emotion due to damage to their orbitofrontal cortex, communication with the amygdala remains unaffected. In fact, the amygdala even lights up when they curse) Furthermore, cussing is considered beneficial when the right situation permits it. So for someone who doesn't normally cuss, the use of such extremely emotionally charged words can do a lot more for someone than saying "cheesy toast" or a bunch of other neutral words. Cussing can even increase someone's pain tolerance. Like everything, it should be in moderation. But! Cussing is an important evolutionary quirk that we've retained from our mammalian cousins because sometimes, it's much more effective to let just a few words convey your emotions.
