OP
(Anonymous) 2011-04-01 12:37 am (UTC)(link)So here's the thing about cursing that is actually quite fascinating. For some odd reason, the words that we learn as "cuss words" are the words that elicited a hardwired response in our brains. We are programmed, as animals, to curse. So far, research points to our amygdala as the origin of this response. (That's extremely interesting because even for people who have "lost" the ability to feel emotion due to damage to their orbitofrontal cortex, communication with the amygdala remains unaffected. In fact, the amygdala even lights up when they curse) Furthermore, cussing is considered beneficial when the right situation permits it. So for someone who doesn't normally cuss, the use of such extremely emotionally charged words can do a lot more for someone than saying "cheesy toast" or a bunch of other neutral words. Cussing can even increase someone's pain tolerance. Like everything, it should be in moderation. But! Cussing is an important evolutionary quirk that we've retained from our mammalian cousins because sometimes, it's much more effective to let just a few words convey your emotions.
Jonah Lehrer and Steven Pinker have written much more about this, and they're both worth a read for a better explanation.
