What's the etiquette for friending someone? Do you friend first, ask questions later, or just friend anyone you want?

Generally, if I get friended by someone I haven't seen before, I won't talk to them. (Hello, Russian spambots!) So if I don't recognize them, it's good to have an introduction. (Just a simple, "Hi! I saw you on N_____ and found your opinions on X interesting!" is fine.)

I've been asked to be friended first, or friended and then spoken to later. Both are fine, for me at least.

A lot of people will have a post in their journal or on their profile on their personal friending policy. Some prefer that you drop a comment, others don't mind either way. I'd just check out the journal and see.

I usually just friend people, then the next post that I have something to comment on I'll drop in a "btw found you through X" and say that I added them.

I usually look at a person's profile and journal to see if they have a "friending policy." I find a lot of people have a brief statement like, "Go ahead and friend me if you want!" or "I only friend people back whom I know IRL" or something like that.

Usually I friend people after talking to them, though. So if I've been interacting with them in their journal, I'll comment asking if it's all right if I friend them.
