Anytime I ever see Main Character/Canon Person (be it N or a Gym Leader, what have you) it always comes off as a terrible Mary Sue insert to me. Since, you know, being a silent protagonist and all, you're just projecting yourself on to the character.

I feel so alone in this opinion.

The fact that I think of the player character as an empty vessel for the player (myself in this case) to participate in the story is probably precisely the reason why I don't ship them with anyone. Since I don't really ascribe any character traits to them, it's hard for me to think of them as a good match for anyone.

I'm thinking that the people who do the shipping perhaps take the opposite approach, though.

I project the fandom or the Pokemon Special personality in each respective player character, and I know tons of people who do too. So I think your theory doesn't work that well. But I see that many people could indeed be projecting themselves into the player.

Yeah, normally I only project myself into the character when I'm playing the game. For fanfics and things, I assign them their own personalities that are mostly nothing like mine. Most of my fanfic-writing friends do the same. So, I would have to disagree with you. But I do see your point.

I personally never play as myself, instead developing completely different personalities for the PCs, and I think that's how the vast majority of people with protag-based ships do it. Granted, there are going to be people who do just use the PC's face to ship themselves with, say, N, but heck, I've seen people do this with NPCs as well. I'm not trying to change your opinion, I'm just explaining the opposite approach, as someone upthread put it. C:
