Pretty sure this is a popular sentiment at this point.

[identity profile] xenafox.livejournal.com 2011-04-03 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. Though, I never liked it :/

I cannot stand steampunk. I wouldn't really have a problem with it if the people in the... fandom-type-thing whatever it is were more original, but everyone who cosplays it looks exactly the same and thinks their characters and outfits are so unique and awesome. I'm really tired of going to cons that have nothing to do with steampunk and seeing tons of people wearing brown with gears glued to their clothes.

...wow I sound ten times more bitter than I am.

[identity profile] math-camel.livejournal.com 2011-04-03 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I kind of want to know what fandom this is because I think steam punk is such an interesting idea. Obviously I'd have to find the "good stuff" but if I'm only in the fandom for those bits it would make it a lot easier not to get annoyed with the "bad stuff." (fingers crossed for Korra.)

Ugh, you and me both. Something tells me it's not going to go away for a looong time though.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-03 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I totally envy you that you see it so much you got tired of it. I have never seen any kind of steampunk stuff in any of my fandoms and it's damn non-existent in my country. I hate that I always have to explain what the fuck is it. Whenever I mention it, people always go "Punk what? It's a music genre?" :|

[identity profile] hoopyfroodyford.livejournal.com 2011-04-03 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I get irrationally annoyed by steampunk. I don't know why.

People who glue flight goggles to tophats don't know what steampunk is. THIS is steampunk:

I WRITE steampunk and I'm getting tired of it :/

[identity profile] crimsontriforce.livejournal.com 2011-04-03 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
...is it? I've seen stuff in my main fandom, but it's always been steampunky to begin with (it's even got canon goggles for everybody XD). Nothing seems to have crossed over to corners of fandom that I know that are fantasy in origin, or contemporary, or whatever. I've only seen steampunk redesigns/steampunk-themed fanfics in Sherlock Holmes fandom so far.
I also see some people at generic comic conventions, but they don't seem to be more prevalent than fantasy or vampire LARPers...? Or did you mean something else, OP?

Then again, I like it, so my tolerance may be higher...

You know what, I get this. The aesthetics are pretty cool (except WHY is it ALWAYS brown THE VICTORIANS WORE COLOR YOU GUYS RRRRGH [/costume history soapbox]) but honestly, sometimes I think if I hear one more person say "Ooh I'm writing a steampunk version of such-and-such" I will pistol-whip them with a ray gun.

...But anyway. *slinks off*

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-04-03 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
In my head canon, this is what slash goggles look like

[identity profile] omorka.livejournal.com 2011-04-03 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I've posted Why I Hate Steampunk rants before (basically, it's an extension of I Hate Victoriana, which may or may not have to do with growing up in the Deep South and participating in several moonlight-and-magnolias house tours before I was old enough to know better, and feeling deeply fucking conflicted about that). It really doesn't speak to me in any good ways at all. I've been trying to start Electropunk and Decopunk movements in some of my fandoms, which would have the "whoo, Tesla!" factor, at least, but so far they haven't gone anywhere.

One of the local cons is pretty much overrun with steampunks, furries, and a few crossovers. I still go, because they have some kick-ass guests, but it'd be nice to see more diversity in the costuming.

[identity profile] doktordeathray.livejournal.com 2011-04-03 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too, as of a little over a year ago.
It transitioned from 'cute' to 'incredibly obnoxious' at some point, you know?

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2011-04-03 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
God, yes. It's even worse when your youngest sister wants to dress that way (thank god she can't afford the clothes, I would be so embarrassed to be around her)

[identity profile] no-one-specific.livejournal.com 2011-04-03 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I never understood what steampunk was. But I imagine that like everything that's overused, it gets annoying.

[identity profile] misscherri.livejournal.com 2011-04-03 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't see enough of it to be annoyed but I can see how it could get really obnoxious. I think if it's done right though it can be good.

[identity profile] masked-creator.livejournal.com 2011-04-03 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm getting a bit tired of it too. I like it but it seems tired now.

[identity profile] ashley marquardt (from livejournal.com) 2011-04-03 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry OP... I just really like the aesthetic. Plus the fact that I could theoretically wear a steampunk-based outfit and not look like total crap whereas if I tried to cosplay I'd be told to gtfo because I fail. Man... I almost wish there was some steam-punk fanfic in my fandoms... As for why it's all brown? I put it in brown, because that's how I personally first saw it, and that's how I sincerely like it. Sorry 'bout that. ^^

If it's any consolation, the relative coolness of Steampunk might be on the verge of obliteration from 14 year old Panic! at the Disco fans. (See secret 34.)

[identity profile] tamabonotchi.livejournal.com 2011-04-04 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
I never cared for steampunk, and the only time it ever annoyed me was when the theme of the only con I ever go to was steampunk and the badges and stuff looked stupid.

[identity profile] xanykaos.livejournal.com 2011-04-04 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
Meph. I'll always like it. But then, at the risk of sounding hipster, I've always liked anachronistic Victorian-looking designs. I didn't like it "before it was cool" but before I knew it was actually a thing, stumbling on to bits of it here and there made me happy.

It gets pervasive, sure, and that's irritating. But I'm not going to stop liking something because it's popular any more than I'll stop liking something because it's unpopular. The only problem I have with it is that being popular means there are a lot of crappy things riding the coattails. Kind of like the whole zombie genre now.

Gears, leather, waistcoats, brass, airships. It's all good. Ain't gonna be my life, but it's sure fun to draw, look at, or mess around with, when the mood takes me.

The OMG!POPULAAAR! phase will pass soon enough, leaving it no worse than before.

[identity profile] llrael.livejournal.com 2011-04-04 09:23 am (UTC)(link)
Steampunk is tired of you too.

No, seriously. I love steampunk as an aesthetic (I blame growing up with Myst) and as a philosophy, and I love the community and the friends I've made through it. But it would be nice if it wasn't EVERYWHERE. Painting cogwheels on something does not make it steampunk.

(That said, I do disagree with the people who think cogwheels should not be used for decoration. In a society where the main motive force is provided by steam and gears, I see no reason why those motifs might not cross over into everyday fashion.)
