I kind of want to know what fandom this is because I think steam punk is such an interesting idea. Obviously I'd have to find the "good stuff" but if I'm only in the fandom for those bits it would make it a lot easier not to get annoyed with the "bad stuff." (fingers crossed for Korra.)

If you're hunting for good steampunk, I really enjoyed Scott Westerfeld's Leviathan. (The sequel just came out, but I don't know the title.) AU Great War with living zeppelins and mech suits--it's good stuff. He doesn't just use the gears and crap; more of the focus is actually put on the ungodly beasts that are engineered into living ecosystems, weapons, and transportation.

I'll second the rec for Leviathan. It's a really cool story and has awesome illustrations. The sequel is called Behemoth I'm pretty sure.
