I know little about this fandom, but still... WTF? what having consideration for society's norms has to do with being gay?

I think that the OP meant by "society's norms" that he has to pick one orientation. Our society tries to make people choose one or the other, Joker just doesn't really give a fuck and will just do what ever he feels like.

In my opinion, he just doesn't really have an orientation. He has this obsession with Batman but he wouldn't be above literally screwing with somebody if it tickled his fancy at the moment.
