...So it having two men with romantic subtext would feel 'wrong'? Or a girl who wants to be the strongest, best trainer, without anything that could be taken as romantic in her character interactions with NPCs is 'wrong'? I'm not liking where you're going with this, OP. Your idea of "appropriate" bothers me.

That's what I was thinking. Why is it only "appropriate" to play a female character when there's (questionable) romantic subtext involved? I don't like what that's implying.

Ditto. :/ N's dialogue stays the same no matter what gender the character is. Like the stripping scene with Silver in HGSS. And so does the motivation for your character. I don't see how it's "more appropriate" with Hilda than with Hilbert.

+1 to this, it's like saying girls can only be appropriate in a story if it's about romance, they can't be heroes.

MTE. Maybe the OP just worded it wrong but I read it as "a female character in Poke'mon without any romantic involvement with anyone in the story feels inappropriate." I think I'm wrong but in case I'm not, I have to say that's a really stupid idea of "appropriate." I find the idea that a female character absolutely has to have a love interest rather dumb as well.

I get that the interactions between the player character and N are up to interpretation, and if someone ships PlayerxN that's totally fine (I saw nothing remotely romantic whatsoever myself, but ship and let ship). But I don't get where OP was going with "romantic subtext" relating to the female character when there's virtually no difference in the dialogue between N and the female player and N and the male player. And people have already pointed out how unfair it'd be to say there couldn't be something between the male character and N.

Yeah, it really just kind of reads like somehow a girl going on a pokemon journey is implausible and weird unless she has a man to obsess over, which is just. What. From the beginning there have been female NPC trainers, and having a female MC has been an option since Crystal. The MC is supposed to be "you", so it only makes sense for there to be a female MC option. Unless of course you don't think girls should play Pokemon at all.

Personally, I see N --> MC loud and clear, but don't really see the MC reciprocating. I mean, he's the leader of a group that regularly pisses off you and your friends, not to mention fucking stole one of your best friend's pokemon, so I don't really read Hilda or Hilbert as liking him much, but then the most the player character ever says to N is "yes" or "no" depending on what you pick every so often, so really it kinda depends on how the person playing the game feels about N. I fully admit that I probably don't see N/Hilda because I'm too busy shipping Hilda and Cheren.
