[Pokemon Black/White]

[identity profile] alliterations.livejournal.com 2011-04-04 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't worry, anon. You're not alone in wanting to delve deeper into this storyline. I was talking to a friend the other night, and I mentioned an event in Pokemon Black, to which she responded, "wait, it's not about being the best Pokemon Master anymore?" I then launched into this huge description of the plot and characters, complete with meta and future speculations.

I suppose not everyone is looking for that sort of thing, or even enjoys it all that much, but I feel it's pretty fun this game provides material for things like this.

[identity profile] made-of-tin.livejournal.com 2011-04-04 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Im new to Pokemon in general and I had the same reaction. I'm not very far into White yet but every time I run into N I keep wishing it was part dating sim ;___;

[identity profile] brishena.livejournal.com 2011-04-04 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Was there any more romantic subtext between the female PC than the male PC? Where N's lines different?

[identity profile] made-of-tin.livejournal.com 2011-04-04 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
As far as I'm aware from when I researched which version I wanted there is no difference in the dialogue... although I could be wrong I haven't played as both genders yet myself.... >>;;

[identity profile] noonish.livejournal.com 2011-04-04 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
No, as far as I'm aware the only gender difference is what your C-Gear looks like.

[identity profile] miezen.livejournal.com 2011-04-04 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
...So it having two men with romantic subtext would feel 'wrong'? Or a girl who wants to be the strongest, best trainer, without anything that could be taken as romantic in her character interactions with NPCs is 'wrong'? I'm not liking where you're going with this, OP. Your idea of "appropriate" bothers me.
Edited 2011-04-04 21:07 (UTC)

[identity profile] brishena.livejournal.com 2011-04-04 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
That's what I was thinking. Why is it only "appropriate" to play a female character when there's (questionable) romantic subtext involved? I don't like what that's implying.

[identity profile] sarajayechan.livejournal.com 2011-04-04 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Ditto. :/ N's dialogue stays the same no matter what gender the character is. Like the stripping scene with Silver in HGSS. And so does the motivation for your character. I don't see how it's "more appropriate" with Hilda than with Hilbert.

+1 to this, it's like saying girls can only be appropriate in a story if it's about romance, they can't be heroes.

[identity profile] beriel.livejournal.com 2011-04-04 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
MTE. :/ I wouldn't mind being a normal, single girl traveling or even a romantic malexmale pairing.

I love N and I love the pairing too... but why would playing as a Hilda instead of a Hilbert make it any more or less romantic? The exact same events and dialogue happen no matter who you're playing as. I get it if you like het, but if somebody likes slash or likes it better as a friendship, that's no more or less appropriate. Something tells me that N wouldn't really care about the gender of somebody he liked.

Still, I'm glad the story worked for you that way. Maybe next time somebody else finds a story works better for them with romance in it, you won't think they're missing the point?

Excuse me? How is it not appropriate to play as a female character in any of the previous generations? How is travelling around to catch eccentric-looking critters and win a critter-sports tournament not "appropriate" for a girl? Because there's no romance for her to star in?

I don't usually get pissed at secrets, but fuck you and your sexist bullshit. And a virus on all your pokemon. >:|

I do understand where you're coming from. A lot of the time when you're allowed to choose between a male and female PC, there are elements of the story that imply that the male PC is the "real" character and the female is an add-on. It would be refreshing to see a game where the female PC was intended as the "real" character.

But I don't think this is particularly true of the Pokémon games, and I'm not really reading any romance between my female PC and N personally. Not to say you can't, it just doesn't seem like an overt thing the developers were going for. Plus the lines are exactly the same for the male PC.

I wish Pokemon would have actual cut-scenes.

I know there are second ones with Pokemon but ff I mean actual scenes like the Ferris wheel and shiz. Y'know like KH does? I WOULD LOVE THAT.

I ship it, but saying that the female story is "appropriate" because it has romantic subtext (intentional or otherwise) is kinda, y'know. A bit sexist.

I just kinda liked the idea of N having one-sided feelings for Girl-protagonist without entirely knowing what his feelings were.

Aren't they supposed to stand in as you though?

What

(Anonymous) 2011-04-05 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, OP... I find it incredibly sexist that you think it's "missing the point of Pokemon" to play as a girl. It's fine if you prefer to play as the boy for whatever reason, but that doesn't mean that if you play as a girl, it's any less valid or you're not a "real fan." Newsflash: the storyline is exactly the same either way, except for a few minor, minor differences in some games.

Playing as a girl =/= shipping, either way.

And there was no romantic subtext at all. I also ship it, but I will admit there is absolutely NOTHING that suggests to it in the games, except possibly when N says "I actually liked you a little", but I'm sure he didn't mean it romantically and I'm pretty sure he says the same thing if you play a boy. Oh, and then there's the ferris wheel scene, which I'm pretty sure the only reason the game creators released that screen shot as a preview was to get the shippers excited. But again, the scene is exactly the same if you play as a boy.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-05 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
I'm curious..what happens that makes it 'romantic'?

(no subject)

[identity profile] sairei.livejournal.com - 2011-04-05 02:51 (UTC) - Expand

[identity profile] corvigryph.livejournal.com 2011-04-05 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
I kinda know how you feel. I used to roll my eyes at "ships" in general but that little change in my attitude is for another day xD, but... this is just such a beautiful "thing" the protagonist (regardless of the gender) and N have going, it's difficult not to see the subtext and i feel it actually enhances the game play more then anything. No need to be ashamed.

Nintendo appears to be trying out all kinds of new angles in this new generation, and a little bit of romance won't kill the "point" ;D

[identity profile] lljscrawls.livejournal.com 2011-04-05 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
Echoing pretty much everyone else here. Saying that it's more "appropriate" to play as the girl because of the romantic subtext REALLY isn't the best choice of words. In terms of the fic I write, the male and female PCs are NOT interchangeable, but in terms of the GAME, they are. Thus why, in terms of the GAME, I ship N with BOTH protagonists, because they're virtually the same person, only genderbent.

That being said, I fully believe the N/Protagonist romantic subtext was intentional. Like I've said a thousand times before, they used the "Love Theme" from Mother 3 and called it "N's Farewell." To pick that particular song for that particular moment . . . I just feel like someone saying "noooo, you're just seeing things that aren't there," doesn't really work here. :/

(Don't get me wrong, I still don't find the Ferris wheel scene to be romantic. But that final scene between the protagonist and N? Yeeaaaaah.)

[identity profile] avroillusion.livejournal.com 2011-04-05 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
Two people separated by duty was definitely a theme I noticed. Unova's two heroes were twins, so they may have been quite close. But in the end, they came to represent different ideologies. One may have even had to kill or banish the other. Whether it was through Ghetsis's design, or because N decided on it, the protag and N ended up taking up the roles of the twin heroes. It really does give the plot a feeling of meaningfulness, or history.
