Excuse me? How is it not appropriate to play as a female character in any of the previous generations? How is travelling around to catch eccentric-looking critters and win a critter-sports tournament not "appropriate" for a girl? Because there's no romance for her to star in?

I don't usually get pissed at secrets, but fuck you and your sexist bullshit. And a virus on all your pokemon. >:|

Thirded. I've chosen the girl character in every generation I can and I just pretended that the male PC was a boyish-looking girl in the rest. (Fuck, he's about 3mm high anyway; it's not like you can tell with primitive GB graphics.) Never once felt incongruous.

How can any plot, let alone the flimsy Pokemon plots, be gendered, anyway?

This. Not to mention, I didn't pick up on any romantic subtext at all. And, in that case, the romantic subtext would still be there if the character was male too. :\ being male or female in the story has nothing to do with it.
