you know what i think? i think you should be able to separate the artist from his art.

actuelly, yeah

If you only ever work with people you deem morally a-okay

- well you sure won't be working much. And missing out on a lot of things.

i dunno what the OP's beef with woody allen is but roman polanski is a pedophile, i think we can have standards for not working with pedophiles

i don't know. if i was an actor and would be offered a role in his film, i still wouldn't hesitate to accept it as he's great at what he does. wouldn't take my kids to the set if i had any, though.

So you have no professional and moral standards, good for you.

Woody Allen cheated on Mia Farrow with, and married, her daughter Soon-Yi, who was his adopted daughter too in all but official documentation and who was ten years old when they met.

I can't separate Woody Allen or Polanski from their art either, sry. Same with a lot of people who have done stuff that really sticks in my craw (Billy Crudup, for instance). It's impossible for me to stop thinking about their sliminess and I can't even begin to remotely enjoy anything they made.

In the case of Woody Allen I'd be willing to give anyone who worked with him a little more of a pass, because that case is more of supreme creepiness, but Polanski was a fugitive child rapist for decades. At some point you need to take responsibility for the company you choose to keep, and I think "fugitive child rapist" is comfortably past that point.

+1

Oh my gosh THIS

Woody never legally adopted Soon-Yi, as far as I know. She was legally the daughter of Mia's former husband, (he never married Mia also, the lived in separated houses).

Pretty sure that's why the person you're replying to called her "his adopted daughter too in all but official documentation"

So much this.

and I have to back pedal a bit

[identity profile] yvw.livejournal.com 2011-04-05 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
usually I really am for separating art and artist (in the past I couldn't enjoy art if i knew the artist wasn't nice to his/her fans) but especially polanski in the case of polanski a line should be drawn. sorry for the snapshot.

Re: actuelly, yeah

[identity profile] urplesquirrel.livejournal.com 2011-04-05 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this exactly. It's not like, say, a photographer who takes beautiful wildlife photos but also said something horribly racist in an interview (not that I would support it, but it would be a situation where I could see someone separating the artist from their art).

No, Roman Polanski is a disgusting individual, and a criminal. Fuck yeah I'll judge anyone who still likes him or would willing work with him.

Woody Allen got together with his adoptive daughter? granted, he waited until she was a legal adult, but I'm guess that's Op's beef with him...

[identity profile] no-one-specific.livejournal.com 2011-04-05 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with this. A lot.

[identity profile] mistress-siana.livejournal.com 2011-04-05 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Generally, yes. And I don't care what party they vote for, if they're having an extramarital affair, or what their opinion on PETA is.

Child-rapist, though?

Is a dealbreaker.

[identity profile] siriuslynow.livejournal.com 2011-04-05 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
i can separate a lot of things

but rape? no way.

(domestic violence is something i can't get passed either)

[identity profile] allstarzs.livejournal.com 2011-04-06 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
Totally agree.

Seperate the art from the artist.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-06 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
I only go with that POV so long as it;s a case of not punishing the art/filmwhatever for who created it, rather than using the art to redeem the artist.

Anne Sexton wrote some really interesting and moving poetry. It shouldn't be used to wave away the fact she claimed to have sexual relations with her daughter.

Anne Sexton supposedly had sexual relations with her daughter. If you're interested in poetry, you shouldn't let her private life stop you from giving it a try.

Re: Seperate the art from the artist.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-06 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
This is actually my go-to example of not being able to separate art from artist - whenever I read Sexton, I can't stop thinking about her daughter. I'm guessing OP has a similar problem.
