I completely agree. No matter how how good their movies are, it doesn't change what they did, especially Polanski. He drugged and raped a -child-, why would anyone want to work with him?

I'm sure this will be wanktastic, but why? It's a business arrangement; they're working, not becoming BFFs. You can respect someone's work and art without respecting/agreeing with anything they've done in their personal life. If we boycotted all the artistic work of anyone with an objectionable personal history, that would leave very few people. (And I have to ask: if this is something you feel morally strongly about, why is it a secret?)

For Woody Allen, meh, it was pretty fucked up with all the things that ensued, but at the end of the day, he was willing to throw his hands up in the air and said, "This is who I am and if you have a problem with it, it is YOUR problem, not mine."

Roman Polanski, on the other hand, took advantage of a young girl by using his status as a big movie director. He also ran off to France before he could put through the justice system. He still can't come on US soil for running away from the law. Great director or not, he broke the law and took off before he could be brought to justice. He is nothing more but a criminal in my eyes and it does disgust me when people defend him.

If you mean well-off actors, yeah I agree. Not even a secret to me.

If you mean every single person on the set down to assistant cameramen and like... while I still hate the two directors, I can't blame the ordinary person for trying to find work. A well-off actor's boycott would be able to make a statement, even if it was a negatively received one. A ordinary set work would be crushed without a second glance.

Agreed. It doesn't matter how brilliant they are: by working with them as a colleague or giving money to them as an audience member, you indirectly condone their behavior and continue to make it possible for them to get away with what they've done because they're ~*~artists~*~.

Same applies to other celebrities, artists and otherwise. Chris Brown, Michael Vick, et cetera.

Ehh, OP. I don't really blame actors/crew 'cause money is money - for millions of dollars I'd be willing to sacrifice some of my moral misgivings.

I do judge people who pay to watch his films though. There are some things I separate the art from the artist, but raping a 13 year old girl isn't one of them.

What Polanski did was unacceptable, but he didn't know any better at the time. He thought that it was consensual sex since the girl's mother pretty much gave two thumbs up at the proposition of Romanski having some alone time with her daughter, and even though the girl objected at first, she stopped resisting after awhile. Of course it was rape, but Romanski may not have been the brightest crayon in the box at the time it all happened (remember Sharon Tate, guys?). And I seriously doubt he's going to have sex with anyone who's underage ever again.

Despite the fact that I loathe him for what he did, I don't hate him and I certainly don't hate his work. I think he's a brilliant director, and I hope I get to see more of his movies.

Woody Allen on the other hand, I don't really care about that much.

Yes. More than just working with them, people actually defend them. It makes me sick, especially in Polanski's case. People think that living in a house most people could never afford in "exile" is enough punishment for raping a child. Yeah, no. He really hasn't payed enough. Woody Allen is just skeevy to the umpteenth degree.

In this life, there's really only one thing that matters, and that's the bottom line. If you want to bring in the cash, you may have to work with some unsavoury people, and that when you work with those people you take steps to protect yourself from them and still get what you want. That's what I was taught as a child.

I am in no way excusing what Polanski did and I think he should be castrated, but actors who work with him tend to bring in quite a bit of money, so I can see why people choose to do so. If you had a chance to make a lot of money, wouldn't you do the same?

As for Woody Allen, it was creepy, but they weren't biologically related, she was a grown adult, and it was all consensual, so I don't have a problem with it.
