Changes them from what? I'm not trying to be wanky, I'm genuinely asking (although apparently I'm "off my game today," whatever that means)--I think it's interesting the way rape/sexual abuse seems to be the one crime we as a society can't forgive no matter what, even more than murder. I'd guess it's because you really have to want to hurt someone to do it; there's no way you can 'accidentally' rape someone or kinda not mean it or something. It's not really something that can be a crime of passion, I guess. And, of course, we judge celebrities' actions differently from everyone else's. I just find that a bit curious.

What the fuck are you even talking about?

If you genuinely don't know why people view rape and child abuse more harshly than other crimes, then I really don't know what to say to you. It's common fucking sense.

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2011-04-05 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Should I use smaller words? I didn't say "other crimes," I said murder. Jesus Christ, something about this topic just makes people incredibly dense. I've seen it at ONTD too. "I'm not sure I agree" apparently suddenly means "I TOTALLY SUPPORT RAPE." I give up.

Whatever lets you sleep at night.

You are so cool. Please teach me to be an e-bully like you! And to have edgy icons of good cartoons with misogynistic phrases on them while you crusade for SJ on a secret community! Really, I'm serious. I would love to be more like you.

Oh you.

*pats you on the head*

Go run along and play in traffic now. The grownups are talking.

It's like if I was asked to work with someone who was a homophobe, I would accept. I wont decline working with someone just because I disagree with their political views. But if they are a murderer or a rapist(I'd put them on the same level unless the murder was an accident) then I wouldn't work with them because I wouldn't want to associate with someone who deliberately brought great harm upon someone else because being a murderer or a rapist makes one a terrible human being imo.

Replying with RP account because I'm lazy.

Sex crimes are WORSE than murder.

Know why?

The victim's suffering ENDS with their death. But a sex crime? it NEVER end. You don't just destroy a person's life, you destroy a part of their soul. How the FUCK is that not worse?

[identity profile] baaing-tree.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 05:40 am (UTC)(link)
Hrm, I see what you're saying, but as a rape survivor, I personally disagree.

However horrific it is, rape is survivable. Murder is not, and I'm happier being alive. And with healing, the suffering from rape can be overcome.

I think the reason we perceive sex crimes as worse than murder is that most of us can perceive situations where killing someone is morally justifiable. Very few can think of a situation where raping someone is morally justifiable.

I survived being molested - doesn't mean there wasn't a cost. And the cost was a piece of my soul I'll never get back.

And I'm speaking personally, I know some people are...better at moving on than me. I know it's possible to survive. I also know that it's also possible to survive and have days were you curse the fact you did. You can put your life into some kind of order, you can move forward. But...there is damage done. More than twenty years later...and yeah...I recently spent a night up because a movie was so triggering I could NOT sleep. That's why I say sex crimes are worse than murder.

[identity profile] baaing-tree.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 05:56 am (UTC)(link)
It sounds like just our different experiences and how we've dealt with them, then. I have never cursed the day I survived; I had long slogs of rough times for sure, but I never wanted to die.

Feel free to tell me to STFU, but have you ever tried EMDR? I remember when my triggers were a lot worse, it helped a lot in bringing down their severity, especially in the "can't sleep due to movie" situations. I realize it doesn't work for everyone, for sure, but...

I've only been able to talk about what happened, admit it, in the last six years. And I haven't had health insurance for the last four. So...I haven't had any therapy at all.

And I honestly don't mind talking to others but one - not the place and two - I have to crash for work. But I wouldn't mind talking privately, over PM's if you wanted to continue the discussion?

[identity profile] baaing-tree.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 06:15 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, I gotcha. Sounds good to me; I don't work tomorrow. And I hear you on the health insurance; I only just got some this year after a couple year's absence and OMG I CAN AFFORD TO GET HIT BY A CAR NOW! Some therapists, fortunately, are very cash-strapped-friendly.

But you're right, this isn't the place. To PM!

[identity profile] beandelphiki.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 07:10 am (UTC)(link)
Sex crimes are WORSE than murder.

Let's see.

Would I prefer to have been sexually abused for years as a child? Or would I prefer to be DEAD?

*thinks*

Yeeeah, I'd rather be alive. So I must personally disagree as well. And honestly, I find the general attitude of people that sex crimes are worse than murder to be quite horrifying - it suggests that victims of sex crimes are worse off than dead. Maybe you feel that way, but you have a chance to get past it.

There's no getting past DEAD.

[personal profile] magnetic_magpie 2011-04-08 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
For a lot of people there's not "getting past" sex crimes either.

There's a difference between just being alive and living well. You're correct that a person who is dead can't do either, but there are a lot of victims - and survivors - of sexual violence who never really get to living well. And I say the damage done to a person's soul is worse than death.

I'm not saying 'better off death' - I'm saying 'hurt more'.
