I thought it was "man" in the gender-neutral sense, as in "human being".

idiot anon from above

I think this is what I was thinking as well. :\ Still feel dumb though.

Fun fact: linguistically speaking, the word "woman" has nothing to do with the male gender. The English root -man, when used in this context, just means "human", with wo- being a prefix denoting a female gender.

This is the reason I lol everytime I see "womyn". If we wanted to make the English language more gender-equal, we would start calling men "weremen", since were- in the prefix meaning male person.

Oh! Then that would make werewolf, "manwolf", wouldn't it? That's fascinating.

Interesting. So I guess that means that technically, female werewolves should not be called werewolves (wowolves, I guess?).

I think if feminists really want to get up in arms over a word, they should try to change vagina to something that doesn't mean 'sheath'. Because if any real, non-slang English word subtly denigrates women, that one does. They might as well have called it 'that thing a penis goes into'.

[identity profile] baaing-tree.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, 'pudendum' is worse. Look up the eytmology of it (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/pudendum), and be depressed.

[identity profile] severely-lupine.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
Hm, that is bad, but I still think vagina is worse. At least the other one can mean both sexes, and there's a certain historical precedent to it, like in the phrase "cover your shame". Plus, it's not a word that's really in common usage.

[identity profile] kelly-h80.livejournal.com 2011-04-05 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
It does. The fact that people use "man" in relation to all humans beings pisses some "womyn" off.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

da

Could be that it's used in the gender-neutral sense, but when you think about the fact that some (a few, not all) ancient scholars used to think women weren't actual people because they were considered to be lesser beings... :( Oh Latin, why do you do this to me.
