Doesn't it also mean "same"? As in "homophones" are words that sound the same? I was always under the impression that "homosexual" means "same sex" as opposed to "heterosexual" (hetero = not the same)

This is just as dumb as the word "herstory" (protip: the etymology of the word "history" doesn't have anything to do with masculine pronouns). I hate it when people insist on using different words or changing words without bothering to look into the etymology of the word beforehand.

Homo meaning "same" is actually a Greek root unrelated to Latin "homo", which makes this argument one more level of ridiculous.

I never took Latin or Greek, I just know that it means "same" and not "man" in this case. Also, doesn't "homo" mean "human" in Latin? Not "man"? I was under the impression that it was only the English translation of the word that made it refer to a specific gender and not just humankind in general

Yes, you've got it right. That's why this whole thing is ridiculous, because even if it were Latin, it wouldn't mean "man" anyway. :P

Words have different definitions or meaning depending the root of the word used. Homo is a good example. Homo with the Latin root means "man", but with the Greek root means "same". Homophone, same sound. Homo sapiens, wise man.

So in this context, homosexual would be same sexual. I mean, man sexual could make sense but then it could be used to describe straight women as well as gay/bi men (and others).

ergo, no men involved with the definition as it uses the Greek root not the Latin one.

Exactly. Look at the definition of "homo" in a dictionary and there it will tell you the definition using the Latin root and the Greek root. It's also important to note that "homo" means "man" as in "human being" and not man as "male human", so if it was with the Greek root it would be "same human being", which makes no sense in the context of the word homosexual.

I was under the impression with regards to the word homosexual that homo came from the greek word, while sexual came from the latin word sexualis. Hence the meaning, same sexuality, which could easily denote a sexual attraction to ones own genre.

See, as a kid I was told "wo" meant "of", so "woman" meant "of man". It wasn't until...now, actually, that I found out otherwise.

But, "herstory"? Really? I can't even think of a flawed explanation for "history" being masculine. It has the letters H-I-S in a row, that's about it.

Hm, well when I looked it up, it does seem to have a masculine root to it. Though the fact that the first three words are an English masculine pronoun are a bit of a coincidence

late 14c., "relation of incidents" (true or false), from O.Fr. historie, from L. historia "narrative, account, tale, story," from Gk. historia "a learning or knowing by inquiry, history, record, narrative," from historein "inquire," from histor "wise man, judge," from PIE *wid-tor-, from base *weid- "to know," lit. "to see" (see vision). Related to Gk. idein "to see," and to eidenai "to know." In M.E., not differentiated from story; sense of "record of past events" probably first attested late 15c. Sense of "systematic account (without reference to time) of a set of natural phenomena" (1560s) is now obsolete except in natural history.

See, I only know that historia was Greek for "knowing by inquiry" or "record", I didn't know that histor meant "wise man" in Greek.

I still refuse to use the term "herstory" though.

"Herstory" was one of my big pet peeves in university. I'm a history major and I dated a girl who called it that. I was not impressed.
