was catalyst about the one with the girl and freaking out about college and then getting rejected...? (yes)

holy crap its like I'm in middle school again. And I agree with you OP. but everyone's MMV

(Anonymous) 2011-04-06 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, this logic could be applied to every book*: YMMV

It is not a difficult concept.

* Or any work of fiction ever, really.

[identity profile] hoa-dao.livejournal.com 2011-04-06 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed with the first anon comment.... It upsets me when people compare works of fiction with each other... I enjoy the stories of everything I read, and I treat them all separately, while also getting the points of the stories even if the themes are the same.

I've never read either book. :|

[identity profile] hoa-dao.livejournal.com 2011-04-06 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I know what Speak is about... Is Catalyst about rape too? From what I'm getting, it's about not knowing what to do with college.

Which are completely different subjects.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-06 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Catalyst is about a girl whose mom died several years ago, and since then she's worked exceptionally hard to be perfect at everything, and she hasn't been able to come to terms with her grief (she's been running away from her problems...) She thinks in terms of science (that always creeped me out a little...) Then, all at once, everything starts to come apart in her life, and she starts to basically fall apart and... well, that's pretty much it, in a nutshell. Girl who overworks herself gets feelings. Or at least that's how I interpreted it...

[identity profile] hoa-dao.livejournal.com 2011-04-06 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah thanks.

...

Still completely different subjects. Did the OP not relate to the character in Speak because she? didn't go through the same things? The character in Speak has different experiences from the character in Catalyst, so unless the OP experienced both lives, I think the secret is a case of only relating to one of them because OP only had one of the experiences.

Hmm I hope that made sense. ^^;

[identity profile] imagined-away.livejournal.com 2011-04-06 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
No, it's not.
It takes place in the same town and the MC of Catalyst makes a comment about knowing who Melinda is by sight/reputation.

She applies to only one college (the one her dead mother went to) but everyone thinks she's applied to like 6. Then she doesn't get in. There's more to it, a whole friendship with another girl and tragedy striking there, but that's what I remember the most. it's been a while since I read the book.

[identity profile] hoa-dao.livejournal.com 2011-04-06 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you for that. ^^;; I don't know if this changes what I said to the anon who replied to me. Need to think XD;

[identity profile] math-camel.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Spoilers? Only if I'm remembering right.

I'm pretty sure there was a secondary character in Catalyst that had given birth to a son (secretly, she wore baggy clothes and didn't talk to anyone) and then her family pretended he was her brother. It gets worse, way worse. I remember getting the impression that it was a case of incest and rape but I'm not sure. And then the kid dies and it was super tragic.

Honestly I would have liked the novel way more if it was just about the over achiever loosing her shit over college because that's how I felt at that age (fuck, even from 7th grade) and those characters are so rarely well written and the ridiculously tragic side character felt like overkill.

[identity profile] oflittlebrain.livejournal.com 2011-04-06 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
WOW, how about some people have different opinions and no one is less legitimate than any other? seriously i liked both of those books

...i didn't really get what her deal was in catalyst though, i'll admit. my memory of it is a bit fuzzy, but... why did she only apply to one college? whyyyy? it just seems stupid, looking back.

i can understand why a lot of people would find speak more relatable. what happened to melinda was something that could happen to anyone, and that makes it fucking scary, wouldn't you agree?

[identity profile] imagined-away.livejournal.com 2011-04-06 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
It was (as i recall) because her mother had gone to that same college and she was convinced she could get in. I remember her trying to call and pretend to be her mom to get herself into the school. I only read that book once though...

(Anonymous) 2011-04-06 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I read Speak, haven't read Catalyst. But frankly I think it's just a good thing that someone is addressing these kinds of issues and writing books about them that are being read by kids, you know? that can only really be a good thing.

[identity profile] imagined-away.livejournal.com 2011-04-06 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I like Speak a lot better because I'm a rape survivor and that book got me through a lot of tough shit.
I liked Catalyst too as I recall but I only read it once. I read Speak once or twice a year.

*shrug* To each their own, OP. It's not a big deal if you like Catalyst better.

[identity profile] tymaporer.livejournal.com 2011-04-06 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Man, am I the only person in the world who hated Speak? It creeped the fuck out of me, to the extent of actually launching a number of my worst phobias. I had no idea so many people liked that thing. Ugh.

[identity profile] hoa-dao.livejournal.com 2011-04-06 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't read it, but I did read what it's about. I understand why it would be creepy. ^^;; But it's supposed to speak out about the unspeakable things that people like Melinda go through... or something.

It's what I'm thinking anyway. People keep a lot inside, and depending on who is reading that book, it can have different effects.

*high five*

Just want to say how excited I was to see a secret about LHA's work - I know her and she fucking rules!

[identity profile] noonish.livejournal.com 2011-04-06 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I think they're both way brilliant and written about different types of people. Either way, two of my favorite books forever.

[identity profile] chambergambit.livejournal.com 2011-04-06 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
At the time that I read them, I related to Speak more, but I think that if I read them now, I would probably relate better to Catalyst.

They're different books about different things happening to different people. I would understand trying to compare them if they covered the same subject matter, but other than "girls in highschool," they really don't, so why bother?

THE MILEAGE. IT VARIES.

[identity profile] schizophrenic0.livejournal.com 2011-04-06 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I liked Speak, but I haven't read Catalyst. I'll have to check it out!

IN YOUR PANTS

[identity profile] ainekatt.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
There are people who honestly enjoyed Speak?

I thought that was just about the worst fucking book ever.

Haven't read the other one though. Haven't touched that author since Speak. Ugh. Almost as bad as Steinbeck. Okay, maybe not THAT bad.

[identity profile] exova.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
I can see liking Catalyst better. Kate and Melinda have very distinct voices, so it makes sense to me that you'd be drawn to one more than the other. They're both excellent books, although I didn't fully appreciate LHA's writing until I read Wintergirls and realized, damn, this woman can turn a beautiful phrase. Anyway, I don't think you're missing anything, just that you like the less popular book.

[identity profile] rocketgirl2.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
I agree, anon! I thought Catalyst was way better. (I was always confused that they read Speak in school, instead).

[identity profile] thesacredchao.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 11:12 am (UTC)(link)
I love both of those books (and Prom, and Fever 1793), but everyone I know goes gaga over Speak and has no idea that the others exist. It drives me crazy.
