Agreed with the first anon comment.... It upsets me when people compare works of fiction with each other... I enjoy the stories of everything I read, and I treat them all separately, while also getting the points of the stories even if the themes are the same.

I've never read either book. :|

I know what Speak is about... Is Catalyst about rape too? From what I'm getting, it's about not knowing what to do with college.

Which are completely different subjects.

Catalyst is about a girl whose mom died several years ago, and since then she's worked exceptionally hard to be perfect at everything, and she hasn't been able to come to terms with her grief (she's been running away from her problems...) She thinks in terms of science (that always creeped me out a little...) Then, all at once, everything starts to come apart in her life, and she starts to basically fall apart and... well, that's pretty much it, in a nutshell. Girl who overworks herself gets feelings. Or at least that's how I interpreted it...

Ah thanks.

...

Still completely different subjects. Did the OP not relate to the character in Speak because she? didn't go through the same things? The character in Speak has different experiences from the character in Catalyst, so unless the OP experienced both lives, I think the secret is a case of only relating to one of them because OP only had one of the experiences.

Hmm I hope that made sense. ^^;

OP

I haven't been through either of those things; I just found Kate's voice more relatable.

Yeah, it made sense.

Oh hi ._.;; I'm suddenly aware of accidentally offending OPs. (never got an OP response before)

Thank you for responding. ^^; I do understand the things that would make you relate to Kate more than Melinda, though. No problem with that. ^^;; I think i was thinking in extremes...

I think it's because I don't go around relating... o_O;;; So I guess I really shouldn't talk about relating to different voices. |D;;

[identity profile] imagined-away.livejournal.com 2011-04-06 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
No, it's not.
It takes place in the same town and the MC of Catalyst makes a comment about knowing who Melinda is by sight/reputation.

She applies to only one college (the one her dead mother went to) but everyone thinks she's applied to like 6. Then she doesn't get in. There's more to it, a whole friendship with another girl and tragedy striking there, but that's what I remember the most. it's been a while since I read the book.

[identity profile] hoa-dao.livejournal.com 2011-04-06 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you for that. ^^;; I don't know if this changes what I said to the anon who replied to me. Need to think XD;

[identity profile] math-camel.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Spoilers? Only if I'm remembering right.

I'm pretty sure there was a secondary character in Catalyst that had given birth to a son (secretly, she wore baggy clothes and didn't talk to anyone) and then her family pretended he was her brother. It gets worse, way worse. I remember getting the impression that it was a case of incest and rape but I'm not sure. And then the kid dies and it was super tragic.

Honestly I would have liked the novel way more if it was just about the over achiever loosing her shit over college because that's how I felt at that age (fuck, even from 7th grade) and those characters are so rarely well written and the ridiculously tragic side character felt like overkill.
