When I first started playing and recruited her, I actually tried to give her a chance, but her choices throughout the game really put me off far more than her accent/mannerisms/character in general.

[identity profile] october-miss.livejournal.com 2011-04-06 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
i don't like her too much either... and it's got nothing to do with her design, it's the fact that she is naive to the point of being an utter moron.

'Ready made for creepy fanboy fantasies' is exactly why I hate every single woman in that game.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-06 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Romanced and adored both Merril and Isabela, and I am a girl.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-06 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I don´t hate all of them (certainly not Aveline!) but yes, even Flemeth comes off as a "Fanboy fantasy" with that clothing of hers.
Funnily, the one I hate the most is Fenris ;D who is supossed to appeal more to my "female" nature since he is so dark and brooding and angsty and overemotional.... of course I want to melt his icy heart!

But didn't you hear from the "Straight Male Gamer"? Bioware has ditched their straight male gamers and instead put in all the gay. So there can't be creepy fanboy fantasies in the game... it doesn't make sense!

[identity profile] archerstar.livejournal.com 2011-04-06 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I mean, yes, she's adorable and her social naivety is kind of endearing.

But as the game wore on, I was done being her friend. I was done telling her that everyone else was wrong and it was okay that she was a blood mage because no one was going to get hurt. That's what you had to say to her to be her friend. She's right and everyone else is wrong. Obviously, she knew best.

But that wasn't real. It wasn't right. An entire clan got slaughtered because she couldn't accept that maybe she was doing the wrong thing. That maybe every other blood mage in that Maker forsaken city falling to demons, and becoming warped and evil was a freaking sign. It stopped being naivety and fell FAR into willful ignorance after about the end of Act I. And I was done with her. Cute accent and mannerisms be damned.

It's even worse if you played the Dalish Origin in the original game because she was freaking there to see that the eluvanen killed Tamlen and destroyed Mahariel. She saw how much damage it did and she still wanted to try and say that it wasn't anything bad?

NO. NO THANK YOU, MERRILL. SIT DOWN. DO NOT PASS GO. DO NOT COLLECT 200 SOVEREIGNS.

*cough* That's what I have to say about that.

[identity profile] damnated.livejournal.com 2011-04-06 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait what, the whole clan gets murdered? In my play-through only the keeper died so I never assumed there was a different outcome. :|

I love her (which was a surprise to me, but oh well). And all my mages use bloodmagic, so I felt it was not my place to judge.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-06 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Did anybody else noticed she sudden personality change from the previous game? Sure, we didn't see much of her, but we got glimpses of her personality. She seemed like the "big sister" type to me, confident in her own knowledge while eager to learn more, often telling my Dalish PC off when she tried to do something silly. This Merril however, seems more like a child.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-06 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I liked Merrill in part because the game does not stop addressing her faults. You're not supposed to give her a free pass for being naive and adorable, that's why you can be a perfectly nice person to her and take a pro-mages stance and still get her to full rivalry just by doing things in her best interest. I was actually pretty worried that she was going to be the 'virginal girl next door' who can do no wrong, but that isn't what I got out of the game and I'm rather pleased about that.

I enjoyed having her around even because she's so naive, it made things entertaining certainly. I know she made stupid choices, but show me a DA2 major-minorish character who didn't and I'll write your a fanfic/draw a fanart.

[identity profile] sandvich.livejournal.com 2011-04-06 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
YES TO ALL OF THIS FOREVER. Did I make this secret in my sleep?

[identity profile] the-flowergirl.livejournal.com 2011-04-06 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I would have liked to see bitchy Merril from the Dalish Origin carry over into DA2. It needed way more bitchy women.

[identity profile] shukivengeance.livejournal.com 2011-04-06 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
How could anyone possibly hate Gwen Cooper?

[identity profile] mondaisenshi.livejournal.com 2011-04-06 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
No, hating her as a PERSON is like hating kittens. Hating her as a CHARACTER is like... um... well, that seems fair. Personally, I'm fond of the character, but that's because she makes me giggle, and I don't blame you for not liking the way she was written. She doesn't seem to have much in the way of character depth.

I LOVE HER

I always liked her. I never found her naive, she knew the risks of what she was doing. She just thought about it and decided that the risks were worth it.

[identity profile] phoeliac.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 10:57 am (UTC)(link)
She's an odd character. They couldn't decide what the fuck to do with her.

I was also unimpressed at her being the only Welsh Dalish elf in the game.

But this picture has made my day, op :D

[identity profile] llrael.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 04:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I... just can't bring myself to hate her. I don't know if it's the huge eyes or the adorable naivete or the fact that she has an accent exactly like my great-aunt's, but no matter how stupid she is and how much I or my Hawke disagreed with her choices, I totally love her. A-durr.

(Ditto the above for Anders, but with more explosions. Goddamnit, Anders.)

Awww, I really like Merrill. She's funny and has an interesting storyline. I think her comedic delivery is spot on. I love her accent too. She and Fenris are my favourites in DA2.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-08 12:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Man, hate if you want, but I thought she was awesome, and very well-written. Hell, I even agreed with her.

Because sure, she seemed naïve (lol cultural shift makes you look ridiculous? I had no idea), but then she got to talk about things she actually cared about, like the eluvian and Dalish history and restoring even a fragment of the elven civilization that once was. Asked Hawke to imagine it. And I did, and I thought, you know what, yes, that's something worth gambling on.

Trusting a pride demon might seem stupid, but as she points out to Anders, there aren't just good and bad spirits; Justice, as he makes perfectly clear in Act 3, is a fucking irredeemable asshole. The spirits are, rather, more dangerous and less dangerous, and sometimes dangerous doesn't mean bad. She was deceived, and she really should've trusted Hawke more, enough to tell him/her about the demon, but everyone in DA2 makes stupid decisions, and I love them for it anyhow.

Except Anders. Fuck you, Anders.
